Can't assassinate some NPCs but my friend can?

Me and my friend have been going stealing in people's houses lately and killing whoever we find in there. But I've noticed that sometimes I don't get the option to execute the NPCs. At first I thought the NPCs are just unkillable but my friend was executing them just fine. Could this be because I haven't done all that many Dark Brotherhood quests or is it a bug or what is it?

I think you need the Blade of Woe.

The fact you didn't mention it means you probabaly don't have it.

Is your friend an a$$hole because he should of probabaly mentioned that.

I do have the blade of woe. I got it and after that I haven't done any brotherhood quests.

is he a vampire?
if yes
it can conflict with blade of woe nothing new
blade of woe activation is same as vampire npc bite
meaning
blade of woe 1-2 m range behind target
vampire bite 4-6m range behind target

need proper stealth and stealth bonus
must be behind target and in stealth
it range is close range if npc have objects behind them
it can cause conflict of not working
some race has worse stealth then others thats no bug its a intended mechanic
meaning they have harder useing stealth functions

ps heavy armour will allways have worse stealth then light armoru and medium a4rmour
reason the noisier your equipment the worse your stealth

if you want to use stealth use emdium armour or light armour avoid heavy armour unless you a tank!
be aware tanks are extremly bad at stealth reaosn noise metal equipment that klings and sqeeks when you walk!

blade of woe works only on NPC
blade of woe is inactive in all PVP!
and lastly NPC target must be Humanoid!

target for blade of woe must be Humanoid!
when stealing in houses main reason why blade of woe might not work are 2!
1 you are in combat and been seen!
2 objects in path of skill

for blade of woe to work all time need is:
you must be behind target and in stealth(hidden)and out of combat!
invisibilitty does not help! potions and skills that give that dont work with balde of woe!
you must be in sneaking hidden stealth! like crouched down!
lastly you may only be within 1-2 m away behind the target!

only way invisibility works is:
if you also crouched down
then it actually enchances your stealth for the duration of that potion!
and will also work with blade of woe

invisibility potion for champion 150 last round 19 sec if i remember correctly
meaning if you crouch down same time you can pickpocket, steal and murder easier!

Well I wear heavy armor so that could explain it?

About light armor is pure bullsheep, but yeah, if you wanna be true thief, you should use medium armor and put some skill points in its stealth passive. Check guild traders fro Night Mother's Embrace set + Night Terror set. 5 items from Embrace decrease detection radius for 2m, 3 items from Terror does same trick... and those bonuses stack!
Like 5 items of armor + 3 of accessory.
With medium armor passives its kinda Ninja Mode On.
Overkill is use those 2 sets with Vampire (no speed penalty while in stealth) and khajiit/bosmer (3m stealth bonus from race, which is also stack with sets effects)
Final blow is Nightblade class, for Veiled Strike -> Concealed Weapon

So Bosmer/Khajiit Nightblade Vampire in Embrace+Terror = you shift running in Stealth (no penalty from Vampire stack with +20% speed in stealth from C.Weapon) and you're nearly invisible for NPCs while stealth running. You can run around guards with tons of bounty and heat, and tey will notice you only if you'll stand in from of them, 1-3m away.
