The Elder Scrolls Online
Noob here, having trouble getting into eso. Can't find build I like. Can I get some build advice?
Most of the skills I like don't seem viable. Please give me honest blunt advice, and let me know if I'm right and you can't make viable builds with these skills.

Silver bolts. I like crossbows, wanted it to be main damage skill, but too much stamina and damage not good?

Summon Shade: Damage is almost nonexistant, and the summon might as well just be a generic debuff spell. Not much of a "summon".

Bear: I like pets, Sorc style conjuration in this mmo isn't the same as normal ES games. Bear seems too slow, doesn't taunt or tank, bear is essentially pretty passive damage?

am I right or am I missing something?

you are right, most skills are niche at best, so you have 2 choices, either go visit deltia's and alcast's sites and copy their builds, or do alot of experimenting on your own to find the skills and rotation that suits you best.

For me, i try to find a combo of skills that give "best bang for the buck" as they say, in other words the combo that gives a good balance of utility plus dps per resource spent, meaning i usually try to avoid using skills which are resource costly but dont offer much in return (eg a self buff that costs 4-5k stamina/magica and only lasts a few seconds and offers only 1 benefit/buff).

As for summoning is eso, yeah its pretty weak and clunky, so unless you have the patience to micro-manage the pets in combat, id avoid using them at all.

Silver bolts is from FIGHTERS GUILD, crossbow is for Daedric, undead and werewolfs, does more damage to these things. When in sewers of Imperial City load up your bars with FIGHTER Guild skills.

The Wardens bear tanks very well. Stand back and send it in first using the ultimate attack key. Let it get a few hits in to hold the agro then you join in with ranged attacks. I easily take out group delve bosses this way.
That's not how you do it though.
Ult key just summons it, again sets off it's special ability (and uses up your ult meter)
It won't attack until you attack (or until you get aggro from the target)

To send a pet toward a target (and therefore take aggro), you hold down the command pet key and use left mouse button (while aiming at a target) to send it out (and right click to bring it back)

Pets don't take aggro if you hit first.

This applies to both Sorceror pet skills (atronach ultimate skill doesn't move) and the Warden's bear ultimate.

I take it that you havent tried it or you would know different.
Just found this in the current patch notes.

"Sending your combat pet to attack an enemy (default Y + Left click) now waits until your pet reaches its target to start combat."
