How to switch between Morrowind and "Core" game?

I just got the game and I'm a bit confused. If I wanted to start in the original core game's starter zone vs Morrowind expansion, how could I do that? Is that not an option and I have to start all my characters in Morrowind?

Also I'm confused on the chronological order of the dlc. Is the Morrowind expansion technically a prequel to the core game?

i think they are asking how to start the "main story" quests

some people say you have to finish the morrwind main story first, others say after you hit a lev (think its 10 or so) you get the quest from a npc in a main city

dont need to be a certain level or complete anything first. Once you have purchased the Morrowind expansion, you will ALWAYS start there on a new toon. To start the Main Story, just travel to a zones main city and you are approached by a hooded figure NPC which starts it. I won't give any spoilers but once you start that it is pretty much the same thing as starting a new toon without the Morrowind expansion. I did this with a lvl 3 toon as soon as I was able to leave Vvardenfel.

There is also a small boat off to the left side of the docks in Seyda Neen that I think takes you to the main town of the faction you chose. So you can go to there as soon as you step out of character creation.
