It would be a shame to just abandon it.
About the plan to swap engine, especially to unity I have serious reservations. TBH I'd rather not do it, even if it was considered a viable migration, not 'from scratch' as you write it. I saw too many project going that way and sinking, while the conservative approach of just living with the existing infrastructure and adding value through the game logic.
Meanwhile you can start ProjectNext in the new environment, where it is indeed from scratch and can do whatever new instead of struggling to re-implement the old accustomed stuff. I would not hesitate to even put my money beside my mouth if you started a KS project for that like Thea sequel did to an overwhelming success. (On funding, the game fell a little short of the expectations, but mostly because we put them so high, as a standalone it's perfectly fine.)
In any case I wish the team all the best.
But I sure wouldn't mind more updates. ;)
