Xbox one controller works great and you will be able to have fun, limited fun atm but totally playable. You will need to rebind the gear selection buttons if you like A & X and it can be a little frustrating at first to work out the settings but once you do it's a walk in the park
Yes, got it to work on B and another helpful poster here said that after you rebind you have to change the option from Press to Constant or Hold so it's like holding down the button like you would pull on a handbrake, it's in the properties somewhere (can't remember off the top of my head as the options are messy to say the least ;)

I haven't played with a standard Xbox controller yet though. The ES2 settings also let you change the stick sensitivity curve, which plays a big part.
It really comes down to what you like and when out on practice just pause and go to view settings then go max on some and see what they do and then you can dial them back.
Hope it helps
Some say that Simulation Racers need to have this and that and I call bull, It's totally what you feel best with period
Dude you're moving pixels on a screen, get back down to earth before judging anyone on how they spend their money and time.
