Given the pretty fast times needed for getting three stars I think these events should have some kind of rolling start because a bad start can easily mess up everyting else following after, so even a perfectly driven 'lesson' might not suffice because of a not that great start.
I was thinking the exact same thing while doing the tests last night. I feel like achieving a good time depends far too much on getting a good launch. While that's certainly a good skill to develop, it should not weigh so heavily on your success - the focus should be on whatever the test is trying to teach you.
And, yes, a ghost is mandatory. Or something like split times at least, I would like to know where my issues are in a whole lap test but I have no idea.
In general I find these tests rather frustrating (first star is handed over for participating, second star is no issue with some reasonable second attempt but three stars are too hard given an event that is not that much fun to repeat over and over again) and have no impression of getting teached anything from them. A race with AI, even with all flaws the AI currently has, is much more enjoyable and also I learn from these races because I can actually see where I'm slow and what my issues are.
For example, once you load into a test, maybe a quick flythrough (or even just stills with a brief explanation) pointing out the various corner cones that are set up, and what they signify: e.g. start braking here, off the brakes and turn in here, hit the apex here, corner exit here, etc.
People who have been to real life track days or who have a lot of experience with racing sims will be familiar with this, but I'm not sure how obvious it will be to much of the wider gaming community, which this game seems to want to appeal to.
The option to display ghosts would be fine, though personally I don't like using them, as I find them more distracting than helpful. I'd prefer the option to display split times - if not for all the tests (since some are rather short and only last a corner or two), at least for the ones where you need to run a full lap.
