Game won't start at all
Installed on Kubuntu 15.10 with Nvidia drivers. When I try to start the game the notification box from Steam pops up to say it's starting the game and then nothing happens.

Looked through a few potential causes in this community but none seem to fix the problem. The Player.log referenced on the Hinterland website doesn't even seem to exist so can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks

Funnily enough, I rebooted my machine and that seems to have solved it. Can get in game now.

I'm unfortunately running into the same issue. I know there was an issue with case sensitive directories before, but I reinstalled since then and verified that the directory is named correctly, so it's not that.

I'm running on Arch so I know it's not officially supported, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having any issues? Latest nvidia drivers 358.16

Same thing happens to me.

My ~/.config/unity3d/Hinterland/TheLongDark/Player.log shows:

This is getting kind of strange. When I reboot my computer and then go to play the game, it launches with no issue. But ... if I then quit the game and try to re-start it, it won't go.

Just so everyone has this information, I was informed of this in IRC:

On Linux, if any Chromium based browser is running (Chromium, Chrome, etc), various Unity3D games won't launch -- this includes The Long Dark.

If you're running Chrom(e)/ium and you're having this issue, try closing the browser. Game should launch.

(Before you ask I don't know why this is, but it may have something to do with Mono.)

Nice to know, thank you for this info. :thumbs:

The more I dig into it the more I think it's not the browser itself, but instead an extension / plugin installed in the browser that's doing it.

I tried reinstalling steam and everything and still nothing seems to work, any of you have better luck than me?

Long time this game didn't get an update, but I verified, the game still working here. I see you played 12 hrs, then your hardware must be compatible. Then, it must be something with your software or driver.

Hi there! I had the same problem since a few days: game crashing immediatly at launch. But now i just looked at my Player.log and saw this:

Selecting FBConfig
GLX_FBCONFIG_ID=39
GLX_BUFFER_SIZE=32
GLX_DOUBLEBUFFER=1
GLX_RED_SIZE=8
GLX_GREEN_SIZE=8
GLX_BLUE_SIZE=8
GLX_ALPHA_SIZE=8
GLX_DEPTH_SIZE=24
GLX_STENCIL_SIZE=8
GLX_SAMPLES_ARB=0
GLX_SAMPLE_BUFFERS_ARB=0
GLX_CONFIG_CAVEAT=NONE

Desktop is 1366 x 768 @ 60 Hz
Invalid resolution: 0 x 0
Failed to initialize ScreenManager

So i went to the prefs file and saw that my resolution was indeed set to 0x0... don't know how it happened, since i reinstalled several times the game to try to fix the problem. Anyway, i changed the resolution in the prefs file and the game now launch properly.
Don't know if your situation is the same, but it may help some people.

Hi, I have the same kind of issue.

Looking at .config/unity3d/Hinterland/TheLongDark/Player.log :

Selecting FBConfig GLX_FBCONFIG_ID=119 GLX_BUFFER_SIZE=32 GLX_DOUBLEBUFFER=1 GLX_RED_SIZE=8 GLX_GREEN_SIZE=8 GLX_BLUE_SIZE=8 GLX_ALPHA_SIZE=8 GLX_DEPTH_SIZE=24 GLX_STENCIL_SIZE=8 GLX_SAMPLES_ARB=0 GLX_SAMPLE_BUFFERS_ARB=0 GLX_STEREO=0 GLX_CONFIG_CAVEAT=NONE Desktop is 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 60, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 63, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 66, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 69, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 72, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 75, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 78, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 XError: GLXBadFBConfig (error 178, opcode 154/34, serial 81, XID 01e00002, display 0x36871a0 Failed to set up master OpenGL context (OpenGL Core (any supported profile)). It seems that Unity32 is looking for an OpenGL driver version 3.2 at least, but cannot find it.
If I do :
[olivarch@azerty ~]$ glxinfo | grep -i opengl OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 11.2.1 OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 3.30 OpenGL core profile context flags: (none) OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile OpenGL core profile extensions: OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 11.2.1 OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30 OpenGL context flags: (none) OpenGL extensions: OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.0 Mesa 11.2.1 OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.00 OpenGL ES profile extensions:

It looks good, as I understand it OpenGL (core) is version 3.3

Any idea what's going on ?

Regards

@ArchOliv: are you running Chrome or Chromium at the same time? I think some Chrome extensions may cause issues.
ArchOliv Apr 21, 2016 @ 12:42pm
No, neither Chrome nor Chormium are installed on my computer.
