Also this. Which is a positive for me. I like finding a stray bullet under a sofa I didn't find the first ten times I was in an interior just because now I have a lantern. Very satisfying...
For navigating in the dark I use the contours of windows for orientation.
I like to use a particular technique which I feel simulates this effect, but might be considered an exploit by some: Pull out a bedroll or some other item and wave it around in front of you (without actually placing it). You can kinda make out the boundaries of walls and obstacles, and navigate about as well as if you were stumbling around by hand.
Worth a try, lantern can be used this way.
