Refuelling jerry cans
As many of us know, you cannot refuel a jerry can. I want to know why not?

Why would you need to? (idea: if you left it soak in water for 3 days, it would get all the chemicals out and you could use it as a huge water bottle?)

I pray they NEVER get anal about food, water containers and how we cook our foods!!!! :steammocking:

Well, you can kinda-sorta refuel a jerry can, you just have to sacrifice your lantern in the process. If you have a jerry can in your inventory (provided it isn't completely full) and you harvest a lantern for parts, the leftover fuel is deposited in the jerry can.

You can also refuel a jerry can, if you have it on you when you cook a fish, the oil left over, will go into the jerry can, provided you don't have some of the lantern oil containers. I've got like 8 filled jerry cans in my base right now, working on filling up three more. :)

You can, but as you suggest, there's no explicit liquid management system... yet. The way you, for example, consolidate your fuel into one jerry can is you take a lantern you're going to salvage, refuel it from one container by dropping all others out of your inventory, putting it away, and then salvaging the lantern while your destination container is the only one in your inventory.

Importantly, you should NEVER salvage a lantern without going through this process. At least I don't. It's a wasted opportunity to transfer some kerosene around.
I think we'll refuel jerry cans from fuel caps on the cars. Why else would there be lantern fuel bottles lying around AND jerry cans? And why fuel caps as well?

I'm pretty convinced that in some part of the story we're gonna have to pick up a jerry can and fill it from cars for an objective. Maybe refuel a car and change its battery from another car, considering the cars turn on by themselves when the magnetic air thingy goes ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I don't think we would be able to drive the car, the objective would just be to fuel the car before a loading screen or something. Anyway I went ahead and rambled again from a simple irrelevant question

Pure speculation, but if there were an older model car, like from the 60's or 70's before everything was computerized, it would be completely plausible that it would be usable even after the disaster. The level of electromagnetic energy necessary to completely burn out an analog system like an old car is sufficient that life wouldn't survive either. So maybe you find an old '67 Impala where the only things wrong with it are it's out of gas and the battery has died due to the cold. So you find a fresh battery in a bunker somewhere, scavenge fuel from fried cars, and bam. Time to motor.

Also... if these are older model cars and trucks and since they are all manual transmissions (they all seem to have a stick shifter), even if the starters are fried... find one on a hill (maybe one at one of the bridges in PV?), we can PUSH START them, as long as they have fuel, even if the battery is dead!

Lol! I am now trying to think if any of the vehicles in the game are sitting nose down on a hill. :D

Yeah, that'll work for a while. But if the battery is below 12v, it can kill your alternator. Then when your battery is completely depleted it'll just stop again.

Sorry for being technical and ruining the fun! :D

Yup! Even if that old beater has a fried solenoid, you can just do a jumper and cross over the solenoid to bypass it. Amazing how little a combustion engine needs to start up and run.

Well, yeah. And there is that whole issue with stalling out, and slamming into a snowdrift. Or an angry bear. But still... :D

You can run a diesel engine on kerosene. It's not a good idea, as it burns out fuel pumps, and can cause a fire due to the higher combustion temperatures. But it can be done (and has). Don;t think it will work in a regular gasoline engine though. But if these are older model cars, from the 70's and 80's, diesel was much cheaper then, so diesel engine vehicles were more common.

As far as the fish oil? Biodiesel? Have to ask Willie Nelson if that would work, lol!
Bomoo Apr 15, 2017 @ 12:02am
I think the question is more can you run a kerosene lantern on diesel.
