That rifle is a fine-tuned, animal-and-other-threat-stopping machine. Best to keep it fine-tuned.
to answer the OP's question, should take 1 - 2 shots to down a deer.
And because guns in almost all FPS games fire raycasts, shooting near a collision box like a tree will sometimes cause the raycast to think it hit the collision of that object and not fire to your target. Just got to make sure the rifle is 100% away from any potential collision and you'll be able to hit most targets.
