I'm not a programmer, but there is clearly a trigger event that causes the animal to "die". It seems that forcing any lodged arrows to drop to the ground at that moment would cure a lot of the headaches. The animal might still fall on the dislodged arrow, but at least it would be there once you finish harvesting and the carcass de-spawns.
You wouldn't get anymore cool screenshots of headshots, but I'd be happy to trade that for getting my arrow back.
BTW I am a programmer, though lately I mostly use HTML/CSS I have done PHP, Javascript, Java and C++ in the past.
My biggest issue is that the arrow doesn't often drop to the ground. Instead it floats in the air right where it hit the animal. It rarely lodges in in target.
I've also noticed that arrows tend to hide under the ice if you kill something on top of the ice. Clicking frantically in the area retrieved it for me.
shot a wolf, hit, arrow drop on ice of Mystery Lake. I can see it.
Enter a house for warm up (loper), then outside about one hour later, no more arrow.
There's definitely a bug with the item display or existence or something to have items, particularly arrows that have been shot, appear only when they feel like appearing. I don't like it and I want it fixed. Not heard anything from Hinterland on this and it's been a problem for a while now, at least since I bought the game last December.

This is extremely frustrating as this game is one of my favorites when it's behaving properly, but I just can't enjoy myself when I'm not only fighting against legitimate challenges in the game but also all the damn bugs that just break the experience and create frustration as I keep having to do what is not meant to be done in TLD, save scum because what I was doing got messed up by a bug. I shouldn't have to be using save editors or save scumming just to get basic functionality in the game, that's not normal and I shouldn't have to be posting something like this, Hinterland should not be ignoring a game breaking issue like this.
I send in a bug report, could you please respond?
EDIT: It would also be VERY helpful if you'd add an autoresponce to your bug reporting system to at least let us know that you received the report and have a means to reply in case any new info comes to light we'd like to pass along to you before a human has had a chance to read and reply to the bug report. Right now that's impossible, other then by sending a new bug report, or posting it here, which makes keeping track of bugs almost impossible for your team with info being scattered about like that. In addition, it would reassure us that you did actually get the report and it didn't just disappear into a black hole somewhere. If we don't get the auto response, that can also give us a clue that something may have gone wrong with the initial bug report and it didn't get through to you.
The devs of the save editor were able to fix my save file so at least my 40+ day custom Stalker run is back alive. I say custom stalking as I used stalker rules as the baseline and changed a couple of settings to tweak the game to my liking.
*[Survival Mode] Arrows deflecting incorrectly off soft surfaces
*[Survival Mode] Arrows being pushed through ground in certain scenarios
*[Survival Mode] Arrows becoming stuck in the air after being fired
I suppose a peaceful philosophy is to accept that running out of arrows won't kill us, but it could.
Look, hinterlands, this is a long-running, constantly regurgitating issue.
Would you please get some code going where
1. Bow shot success, Icon flashes, 1 xp
2. Simple Arrow removed from game. Arrow(s) if applicable.
3. Harvest animal, Simple Arrow(s) available to harvest at reduced condition. By harvest I mean you have to expend time and effort to safely extract the arrow sunk into its corpse, because that's what arrows have to do kill barring some freak shot that clips the carotid.
Your current clumsy system of bouncing arrows, absorbed arrows, arrows that "fall" out and land wherever (they don't really, your code just doesn't know what to do with Simple Arrows in an animal when we transition) is BROKEN.
I don't understand how your code can load up a region I'm revisiting and repro every stick, recwood, simple tool box, liter of water, etc. I have scattered all over the whole map, but a rigid, fair, risky, semi-realistic solution to shooting an animal with an arrow and recovering said arrow is so difficult.
I just shot a wolf outside Camp Office point blank, killed it, went over to it, no arrow. Went inside, grabbed firewood, exited, false hoping arrow would materialize next to it, nope.
That's 2 of my 12 arrows gone.
Gettin' old. This issue continually, continually rears its head.
