High CPU temp
Hello everyone. I'm having a lot of problems with The Long Dark causing my computer to heat up to 70 Celcius and higher even on low settings. This makes no sense to me as I have brand new computer with a decent processor, GPU, and cooling system. No programs like Chrome are being run in the background. Not even CPU-heavy games like Overwatch cause my CPU to heat up this much. Is this is common issue with the game or am I doing something wrong?

OS: Windows 10
Processor: Intel i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60 Ghz
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060
Model: Acer Predator Helios 300 (2019)

The game was originally developed to run on minimum Dual Core CPUs, so losing 1 core out of 6 *should* not hurt it.

If that doesn't work, send a bug report/tech inquiry to Hinterland on their support Portal. Their Tech Team and devs would obviously have a better idea of what might be happening, and what to try, though with everyone at the studio working from home due to the pandemic, I am sure they are likely backlogged, and there may be a bit of a delay in getting an email response from them.

Your laptop is very similar to mine, only difference is I have 32GB system RAM, and an RTX 2070 MaxQ/Intel UHD 630.

I haven't seen temps quite as high as yours, usually hitting 60-65°C, if I don't have my laptop sitting on a cooling platform. I use a Targus dual high-speed fan platform, which does drop the CPU and GPU temps by 7-15°C (depending on loads). And I am running on all Ultra settings except SSAO, which I have toggled off, due to that setting often causing issues with framerates and stuttering in this game. Not sure if that would really make a huge difference in CPU temps or not.

A good cooling pad/platform with a laptop, if you are able should help some, and that is really the only suggestion I can give, other than making sure all vents are clean and unobstructed when using your laptop. The one I use cost me all of $25 USD, on sale from Best Buy.

I have an MSI GS75 Stealth, not sure what make/model yours is. That could also make a difference as well, if we have laptops from different makers.

Hope you get it worked out, though TBH, that temp is not that high for a laptop. Laptops tend to run hotter than desktops, almost always.

Thank you for the reply! I forgot to mention that I have an Acer Helios Predator 300 2019 model! I know laptops run hotter than desktops, but I thought it was weird that more demanding games seem to have less of an effect on the CPU temps.

Nice! The Predator is a really good gaming laptop.

Yeah, not sure why you are having more issues with heat than I am. This game is really CPU locked/heavy. But we have the same CPU. So we have n difference there. I have never tried it,but I do know that for Grim Dawn, another game I play a lot of, that is also CPU locked, I have to set core affinity to exclude CPU 0 (all cores but 0), for the game to run well, laptop or desktop. Have you tried checking which cores are seeing the heaviest load when running TLD, to see if the game is not spreading the load out evenly? And then setting core affinity to use all but that core or cores? Or checking which core may be running hottest, and seeing if excluding that core/those cores helps?

It's definitely putting a lot of pressure mostly on CPU 5 for some reason. I'll see if I can do anything to set core affinity to the other cores evenly, if that's possible. I'm a little bit new to this level of customization but thank you for getting me started!
