Solved constant crashes!
Just started playing this awesome game recently. But I got countless times of crashes during my gameplay. After trial and error a lot, I found 2 possible solutions that you could give a try.

METHOD 1:

The first solution is rather simple as suggested by the Hinterland. Force the game to run in DX9 mode.

TRY STARTING GAME IN DX9 MODE
==============================

The game now defaults to DirectX11 (from DirectX 9). Not all systems and graphic cards/chips are compatible with the more current DX11 displays.

If needed, players can still run in Directx9 mode by running tld_dx9.bat or passing -force-d3d9 as a command line parameter when launching the game.

In Steam interface, click on "LIBRARY".
In games list, right click on "The Long Dark".
Choose "Properties"
Click "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..."
Paste into text box "-force-d3d9" without the quotes
Click "OK".
Click "CLOSE".

In my case, I tried and the game did run smoothly, but it caused another problem. The snow and mountain edges started flckering like crazy. The problem was still there even I tuned down my graphic settings to lowest.

METHOD 2:

Launch the game with Windows Batch File.
=================================
Instead of launching the game with Desktop icon or the PLAY button in Steam, launch it with Windows Batch File.

In games list, right click on "The Long Dark".
Choose "Properties"
Go to "Local Files"
Click "Browse Local Files"
Run "tld_borderless_dx11"

I hit the jackpot with this one. No more crash, no more flickering. I don't think it will work for everyone, but I suppose you could give it a shot. =)

If TLD only runs properly in a window there must be some problem on your machine.

I tried "-popupwindow -force-d3d11" as launch option, but it crashed again. The game runs smoothly only if I launch it with Windows Batch File. Yeah I know it sounds weird.

Though I run in window mode but the game appears as full screen so it works perfectly fine.
