Disable cloud saves through steam
Open the steam client and go to view, settings, cloud. Uncheck the box and that will automatically disable cloud saving.
Go to File Explorer and click on Windows C Drive. You may have to unhide folders by clicking on "View" and then checking "Hidden Folders" Go into Users, your username, AppData, Hinterland, TheLongDark. If you want to keep your saves intact then create a back up of the files, otherwise just delete every file in "TheLongDark" folder. You can leave "TheLongDarkNoSync" folder there as it won't do anything.
Once you delete the files, starting up the game will re-create the files needed to run the game and your game should work properly. if you delete everything then you'll have to reset the brightness, controls and anything else to your liking but it will fix the control issue.
Let me know what happens.
I contacted support some days ago and have had no response. I don't see this type of issue being addressed by any real assistance from mods in the discussions either. It's a shame they don't to be doing much in addressing a game breaking bug many people have who took part in their official event.
I know the older versions aren't supported, but when it breaks/deletes current version data and makes the game literally unplayable those are the kinda things I'd love to be warned about. The wording in the time capsule post is just we've done our best to protect your saves, but follow directions carefully. Instead of a "use at your own risk cause we aren't sure exactly what could happen if you use this build switcher we made"
I suppose I don't have anything to lose now but to try what you recommended. It's hard to believe stats like feats and challenge completion isn't saved on a server somewhere but some local files that easily be altered or deleted. This will be at least the third time my badge progress has been deleted and I had just gotten all of them earlier this summer.
I remember a couple years ago they did this look back in the past thing, and I wasn't able to do it then, but I know now if this switching versions becomes possible again in the future not to engage with it.
Same, followed steps, didn't change anything.

I was about to send my first through my monitor when the help links posted didn't yield any results until I just deleted the whole Hinterland folder with the nosync folder included. THAT'S when it worked. So I guess it does matter.
And thankfully I was able to preserve my challenge/feats/and saves by restoring TheLongDark folder from a previous backup. Which I thought might replace the new usercfg file but I never changed the nosync one before so that was where the whole issue lay. I'm a happy boy now.
