[Outdated - Resolved] Lake Gunshots quest - no progression
Note by OP: Please do not respond to this thread any more. The game has been updated since and the problem is solved.
========

So, I placed the Forest Talker bag at the cabin (taking the ammo from it first), and the journal instructed me to check the area tomorrow.
I then left for Forlorn Muskeg, spending about a week there, fruitlessly waiting for an aurora.
After returning to the lake gunshots quest area, I found a new dead body with a bloodied document, which I took, I also searched the cabin but did not find any quest-related items, and I also searched the second dead body on the lake (this one was there much earlier).

The journal still tells me to check the area tomorrow, no quest progression happened.

What am I missing or what's wrong?

Bump.

Same issue here.

Same here. But I guess that the OP (like myself) came too late. I also did not come back "tomorrow", but about another day later. When you pick up the blood stained letter from the corpse, it says something like......."unintelligible...too late" or something along these lines....If I remember correctly. My guess was I missed part of the information for the sideplot because I came "too late" to check.

If you take the ammo from the bag, there will be a note inside the cabin saying something like:

"I appreciate everything you did for me, but stealing my ammo has basically signed my death certificate. Just remember, karma comes back to us all in the end."

I assume it is meant that if you take the ammo then the forest talker is not able to defend himself, thus he is killed because of it the following day.

I'm not sure what happens if you don't take the ammo. I was kind of annoyed by this because when you are presented with the choice to leave the bag or leave bag (take ammo), there is no implication that you are stealing it or whether it is being offered as a reward for your efforts. It would have been more clear if the "take ammo" option were in red, like in other instances where red denotes that the items belong to someone else.

If you don't take his ammo, you're supposed to find a "thank you"-note and some deerskin pants inside his cabin. Unfortunately, that's exactly what this bug prevents from happening.

The choice happens before the Forest Talker gets involved at all; it's entirely you contemplating how you want to return his bag. So there's really no way to read any ambiguity into it (he can't possibly reward you for something he doesn't know you're doing at that point in time). You either return the bag as-is, or you're peeking inside and steal his ammo. I can understand that people who are low on ammo might be blinded by the need to grab those bullets, but the moral choice itself is really as black and white as it gets.

I don't know about the glitch, but after I didn't take the ammo, I found that nice note and the deerskin pants. However, I had no idea how dark the opposite ending was. I saw a youtube video of another guy doing this quest, and I was shocked! He, of course, took the precious ammo, and ended up seeing the corpse with an arrow in its arm. Thanks for an interesting quest, Hinterland, but... this was quite a bit different than all of the other objectives. Still a good addition, though!

Also, on a side note: exactly how many bullets does the pack have? Just curious. The video I saw didn't actually show how many rounds the guy got from it.
