Regional Decay.
For starting, I will say that I have played the Long Dark since it first emerged on Steam - I have 300 hours in the Long Dark on this account and 60 some odd on another account. I have played all game modes, all events, and all challenges.

Now, with the pretext out of the way, I'd like to acknowledge what I, personally, find to be the biggest complaint I have: Regional Decay.

In short, items decay in Regions even if you never interact with them. Other than seeing new terrain and places, what reason thematically would a player have to leave local regions, especially on difficulties where animals respawn at regular intervals?

At the very least, I'd like to see TLD make Regional Decay a choice in Custom mode - so the new loot that you discover in other regions isn't instantly ruined by the time you decide to trek there.

In "Gear Decay Modifier" Mod there's an option to reduce decay rate for items you didn't picked up already.

Pretty certain HL won't implement anything related to decay rate in the custom settings.

Aye, only reduce, even on the slowest settings most things ruin before you reach them, especially in far away regions (I.E DP from ML, etc.)

They shouldn't and I'm pretty sure they don't (I updated Xpazeman mod a few times, even though it was one year ago). If they are it's definitely not intended.

The mod override the method responsible for decreasing item condition. The minimum slider value is 0 so there's no decay. Meaning you can stop decay for any item.

However item condition when picked up are randomized somehow (can't tell more about it)

I agree. The decay timeline is way too quick. If the disaster 'just happened' as we crashed our plane then most things should stay at a reasonable level of freshness.

Can you give me a link to the mod, if the forums won't permit, add me and send it. I appreciate it.

Essentially my thoughts. There is no artificial reason why clothes decay in 45-60 days, let alone canned goods, other than "artificial difficulty", which, in a game that prides itself on the realism of it's survival features seems contrived.

Oh! This is actually the first time I've used the mod through this playthrough. No idea if it still functions or not, but I hope so.
Thanks for the effort, big dog, take some points.

You're welcome.

Even though it is labelled "not updated" this is a very simple (code-wise) mod and therefore very resilient so I'm confident it's working fine.

I've played 1000 hours vanilla without mod, wrote and commented in the wish subforum many times, realised HL don't give a damn except when it's very noisy

80% of community wishes was already granted by modders in the shadow we simply didn't know it.

I'm assuming this has always been a thing? Is it food only or items too? Not sure how decay works for non-edibles. I'm finding food at 0% condition, but this is the first time I made it over 100 days, so I'm in new territory with this. :D

Honestly after 500hours in the game, I'm still not sure items decays if you don't interact with them, I found a 85% sardine can after 200 days in interloper

IIRC, Sardines are actually the slowest decaying thing in the game. It's definitely a thing - check clothes in regions you haven't been to, most of (if not tall of them) will be "ruined".
