You can cook bannock straight on a cook surface with no pan. Select the Place option, then the Hand icon, which is No Tool.
I got into a one-track mind there. Looking at it with a more open mind, given your pointing it out, I can see that what I had concluded was a strange symbol for a "recycled can" was something entirely different. Funny how something staring right in your face gets brushed aside because "I know it is for recycled cans".
