The Long Dark

My 1st experience & thought of the Tales from the far side DLC - Have to admit is dissapointment :(
7 Years ago I bought TLD and back then - Wintermute was included as part of the game and not a separate DLC.

I rinsed the game completing all the episodes, getting all the achievement and most of the badges and maxing out what the survival mode had too offer - I put about 800hrs in total.

Today, I come back to it for the 1st time in about 3-4 years ...I installed the DLC and loaded the game.

The front screen confirmed the DLC was installed so I head off to find the new "story" or which I obviously couldn't as Ive since found out the story has to be "unlocked" by me finding the new region in the game :/

This obviously isnt the best thing ive heard as I havent played this for so long I cant remember everything as clear as I used to and now either I dedicate another large amount of my time into "finding the bloody DLC region" should just be there on the map .. Really what idiot thought that would be a clever idea????

So after thinking sod this and just looking up how to get to the new region ... I get there and then .. walk ... and walk ... and walk thru caves and walk and walk ... found some nuts and then walk through a never ending set of liner paths that finally lead me to a "open" area ..... 10 mins of just walking thru caves to find a open area with things to do apart from just walk ... This DLC is really selling itself :/

I cant help feel that the Devs lost their Idea/plot of what this game offered the 1st time it was released (7 years ago!!) ... Back then it was way way way more basic and you didnt have a large amount of items to craft and there wasnt a mega load of beasts that were gonna give u trouble.

The exploration, fighting & surviving the "elements" and trying not to get lost with permadeath added was what attracted me to this game and kept me coming back for more.

Now it seems way too easy unless u ramp up the difficulty to inter - which then becomes a pita purely due to trying to find anything that will "light a fire" """Without"""" having to travel to certain "special" region in order to find some matches .. That really takes out the "surprise of exploration" if you know a certain region will deffo have the items you need?

So my 1st run of the DLC ended in me walking of a cliff on purpose as I got so bored that I didnt even have the will to save the game for another run.

Yes this game is beautiful but after seeing the same trucks/trees/cliffs/ive ponds etc for the past 7 years .. its nothing new.

Yes the DLC adds a lot more items to the list, but imo that makes the game way to easy n now just feels like a walking simulator .. ie its boring.

Yes I would still recommend this game to others that have never played it - But ...

No I will not be buying "The long dark 2" straight away as Ive learned my lesson the 1st time round ... I will just wait 4-5 years n then get it on a nice discount no less that 80% for me.

Knowing that the Devs have literally made a game and then put the completion of it on hold for so long whilst they literally made this DLC & obviously started development on their new game .. just leaves a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ taste in my mouth,

Has anybody else felt this way about the DLC? .. I just didnt get the "ooohh this is new" feeling at all and am quite disappointed tbh

If Im missing something, please say n it might re-inject some hope that there is something "new" in this DLC apart from the same things that every other survival game offers (recipes, new maps etc)

Is The long Dark 2 just going to be this exact game but again with "new maps" and "better graphics" or do u think the Devs might include something that will require u to use ure brain or do u think they will just spoon feed us all into bordem again?

Rant over .. but TLDR ... DLC = Meh imo :hatchetTLD:

If you got bored from ten minutes of travel, then I don't think there's much anyone can say that will make you happy. Travel is an integral part of the game; especially the Tales quests.

Go find some timberwolves or a cougar. That'll give you some new challenges. There's entirely new mechanics added with the Tales quests, plus the story ties into Wintermute.

This game is one of my favorites, and sits at the top of my hours played list. That said, I totally understand when people say they don't like it. There's a lot of walking, a lot of killing time, you can die miserably and unexpectedly just from a few bad decisions and/or a run of bad luck.

It is definitely more than a walking simulator, but ... maybe a looting simulator? Personally I feel driven to get to new areas just to see what I can find there, both the environments and the stuff. It's why I enjoy the interloper difficulty level but normally play custom just because there's better loot (although sometimes just too much of it). There's also a nice unlocking aspect, unlocking badges, skill levels, achievements, and items (like the pack/crampons/woodworking tools).

I was kind of done with it until the DLC dropped. The trader, travois, and house customization (plus a few new areas I hadn't visited yet) were enough to pull me back
in.

The story that it adds is nice. I think it needs a little refinement, there's a lot of searching involved, I don't see how you find everything you need to solve the stories without youtubing and I hate when games send you to the internet to figure out how to beat them.

Ultimately once I visit all the new areas and finish out the Tales, I'll probably be done with it again. Still I think >700 hours played is more than I can ask of any game. I've gotten my money's worth.

If I was as bored with it as you sound, I would probably just find something else to play.

Tales from the Far Side, now that sounds like a fun DLC.
Sounds to me you need a scripted story type thing, from the get go. Wintermute is just that, but I see you have already been there, done that.

You say you've played Survival? then with all due respect I suggest you know the score there too. Nothing comes to you on a plate. You should know, you have to seek out everything. Including the Tales.

Here's a hint. Go to Forsaken Airfield, climb the control tower and pick up a note along with the hand held radio receiver. Everything starts there, but it's all at your pace.

I've been over 500 days getting my Loper ready to do the Tales. Kept getting sidetracked. (Fallout anyone :steamhappy:) It's only now I'm setting out to BR to find the Broken Bridge no longer impassable. To say I'm excited would be putting it mildly.
