You have to sprint>crouch>duck into the rock niches (tunnels) to work your way around the cave to get to the spear. It's finicky- your timing has to be a bit precise to keep the bear from detecting you and nabbing you between the rock niches. I'm sure there are a good number of videos on it on YouTube, Twitch, and possibly a step by step on the online forums as well.
If you have trouble with the rapid clicking for the spear fights- use the Accessibility option in the main menu, and toggle it to "Click & Hold for Struggles"- the game will click for you in perfect timing. And don't pass up that grotto with the backpack in it before you get into the bear den- it has some items that may end up being very helpful.
Not sure what you mean by "the lighting engine", though. Are things to dark or too bright and blasted out? There have been a number of people saying they are experiencing lighting bugs since the update and hotifx.
Sometimes lighting makes things look flatter or more even than they really are, not buggy per-se, but I have the brightness turned up a bit too high as well I guess.
Try to move when the bear is moving away from you and the spot you want to move to, when it has its back turned to you, if possible. No need to rush through it, it's not a speedrun.
I think the game overall is superb, but the developer really shows their indie nature here, clunky movement, uninteresting and repetitive mechanics, tedious cut scenes you can't escape from, bad clipping as you sneak through the environment, glaring lighting so you can't see where to go, this one section has it all. At one point I was just walking along inside the bear because he pounced and did not connect, so then sauntered about with me inside him!
Gone back to playing as pure survival, and am loving that.
"Okay, go from zone A to zone C for bear stabber." Okay, fine.
"Then go back to zone A." Uh, alright, "Okay now that you're back at zone A go back to zone B and go around all the edges of it to get radio bits." Sounds tedious, but okay.
"Ok, and while you're there fight the bear off in irritating QTEs, where he spawns immediately out of your range of vision, rushes at you, you have a mash-off, he runs away a little bit. Repeat that two more times, and then have that entire rigamarole again at the other two transponder points." Dear god, please stop. This is 3 bear stabbing mash-offs (so 3 points of failure if you're not super cool mash pro) times 3 transponders. I feel like I pissed the developers off.
"And once you're done with all that, despite you looking every which way to spot murder bear at every point in time because you know there's a murderbear threat, we're going to drop him right behind you, make you watch yourself get mauled, only to have a lovely no gear stealth level in a survival game that lacks any genuine stealth mechanics." Dude, what the ♥♥♥♥. Couldn't I have just stabbed the bear really good the last time and called it a day?
