Carry fewer items, it will help you move faster.
Also, try higher difficulty settings and maybe play survival instead of story mode.
Story has 3 difficulty settings which roughly correspond to the first 3 settings in survival.
Personally, I also found story mode pretty boring but I really enjoy survival mode. I play on a custom setting which is kind of a mix of the 3rd and 4th difficulty modes.
That being said, this game does tend to be a mostly slow/meditative experience, puncuated by the occasional emergency (wolf ambush, sudden blizzard, etc.). If you are looking for a high-intensity game then TLD might not be for you :/
This is one thing about story mode that bothers me also. I don't have to worry about this in survival mode though.
