Old Bear Fighting
I have encountered the old bear 3 times now while trying to do the radio parts quest. I fight him off with the spear but he just turns around right away and fights me again. He's camping one of the towers and I don't seem to be able to hurt him at all. Does he ever move away or is this where I'm supposed to fight him?

I fought him two times each at two towers. Then he left. Once he left me almost dead though

He just spins around and attacks me right away again before I can fix my sprains so I can move away from him or pick up the spear. It's getting really annoying to the point I'm concidering just stopping. I've finished chapter two before redux...I just really wanted to do it now, but this is getting to me. :(

Mackenzie's meant to fight him with the spear at each encounter.

For me Old Bear charged three times during each encounter before Mackenzie finally succeeded in driving it off.

It is a lot more difficult if you're not able to get the spear aimed in time. It does less damage if you're ready, and you'll keep a hold on the spear. I wouldn't worry about healing anything 'til after the encounter's over - unless you're bleeding to death. There isn't much time between charges.

Good luck!

thanks. I managed to get the first bear set done in three encounters. I was baffled because I managed to get the first tower without encountering the bear so it was surprising the second time. I'm better prepared now.

Edit:
I finally managed to defeat him everytime without getting hurt. Two to three times at two of the towers.
But it doesn't seem to matter if you defeat him or if you don't succeed, as long as you don't die. Upon leaving the area the bear will surprise you, take you down and drag you to his cave anyway, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Now, I have explored quite some area of the cave, but I can't find anything but sticks, and in the end the bear will spot me and take me down. Any hint what to do or where this damn spear is hidden?

So, do I get this right: the bear CAN be defeated?

I got attacked at least four times already at one single tower, defended myself succesfully with the spear without taking damage, but it just keeps coming back at me. I don't understand the logic of this at all - I love the game, but this really makes me turn the PC off and is taking away all the fun.

I saved just some 20m away from the point where the bear spawns, so I had ample time to find out how to get away unhurt. I have a fire at that savepoint, so I fight him, drink a cup of coffe, fight him, return to the fire, wait a few minutes and fight him again - rinse and repeat. It does not seem to have any effect.

did it! Got the parts and got the bear in his cave. That was tough but worth it!
Hello. Good job. Now hopefully the aurora spawns while you are on way to the dam lol. Took me several tries in the bear cave.

I waited an in game week at the aurora hatch for the aurora and finally gave up. Going to try for that again as well as a bunch of the other side quests before I hit the dam. Fingers crossed! I'd like to be able to say I finished it all this time around.
Hiya. Hey dont sleep more then 2 hours straight. take naps. with the new redux seems its random auroras between nights (anywhere from dusk to dawn and last an hour or two). other times it will be most of the nights. but so far been testing it and seems when you sleep 2-6 hours you may miss the window. if you do one hour at time you may or may not get an aurora. if you do, hurry, you only have few moments (1-2 hours maybe or so). otherwise it may regular aurora (also have flashlight out during the night, so it can tell you if an aurora is up). and stay near the hatch lol. i found out from the naps after i got fed up/tired of waiting 8 days again (10 days in the old version lol, 8 days in redux, then when i took naps (1 hour apart, i notice some auroras here and there, but they dont last long. so save if you see one before entering lol.

I'm in the house at the lake for a week or more now (need to hunt and dry enough wolfskins for a new coat, since the bear destroyed mine).
The aurora appears quite reliably every night, an hour after going to sleep.
McKenzie wakes up when the aurora appears, so don't hesitate to sleep long.

oh, if I'm aurora watching I was sleeping through the day in the hat creek cave then lighting a fire next to the hatch and waiting out the night there.

However, once I had completed the Old Bear stuff and it was set to the dam part of the story, the Aurora was much more frequent and I was able to do the hatch.

The way the mechanics of the radio tower fights work is you need to fight the bear off continuously until you get the radio parts from the tower. Once you collect the parts from the tower, you fight him one last time and drive him off.

It was a bug, but I killed the bear at radio tower 2 after stabbing it a few times then used the flare gun on it twice - it died after a bit of running around. I cut it up and ate it - and fed loads of it to the wolves as an all you can eat affair - they loved it. I even skinned it and put the skin on the floor of my home base at the Camp Office in ML - suck it bear!

The damn bear at tower 2 was doing tag team with a wolf at the same time trying to kill me - taught them both a lesson they wont forget (or remember) hah!

Unfortunatelty I had to fight the damn bear again at radio tower 3 and then in its cave. Its called as demon bear for a reason...

Must admit the bear fight episodes have ruined the fun of Wintermute for me. I KNOW I suck at combat games, but the way the bear comes at me I have not had a chance to arm or use a weapon, and just get mauled. If I had wanted a combat simulator that required button-mashing fighting skills I would have bought Gods of War or somethiing, not a survival simulator.
Will watch some play-throughs to see how it should be done, but am not enjoying the Wintermule story once "Signal to Noise" began - up until then it was great!!
