I'm trying a second time now, having reloaded to a previous checkpoint.
Something I've done this time around is different. This time around I found a human corpse while traversing the bear's lair. The first time I tried this, I didn't find it. The corpse has a note, presumably from the dead man's daughter. Not sure if the corpse itself is significant, but it does mean that I took a different path than the one I took on my first run.
This time, when I reached the alcove where the spear is located, the bear entered the area at the same time, whereas it did not before. I suspect that this is how it is to be intended.
I've heard a rumour that making use of an emergency stim might be required in order to defeat the bear. In my case, I used an e-stim after fighting the bear off once, and was under its effects when the bear charged me for a second time. It was during that attempt that I made the killing blow.
