Whetstone

My makeshift knife broke long ago, and my hatchet is getting pretty weathered. I'm still in Milton, I've ransacked every house, and no sign of a whetstone. Is getting one a story event, or do I just need to cross my fingers?

Somehow one ended up in my inventory, I think when I was giving grandma grey some items to build trust. Unfortunately I didn't really understand the trust mechanic until episode 2.

Yeah, you have to give the old lady random stuff that she's asking for(sticks, mushrooms, can opener, MRE, etc). You get a certain amount of trust points for giving her stuff. I just gathered up a ton of sticks and was able to gain a bunch of points. You ask her about sharpening and the stone goes into yioru inventory(though it doesn't say anything to let you know).
I burned through the whole stone and my hatchet is still at like 70%

I would also be interested to know if any whetstones can be looted in Milton. Hatchet is at 0%, no knife, can't chop wood, can't fend off wolves.

I've searched the whole of it and never found one besides what the old lady gave me.

I didn't find any either. You'll find them in episode 2 though.

I'm used to playing sandbox mode. Hunker down, stock up, search everything. With my one axe ruined, I think you're right and I definitely need to move on.

Ya, best to leave if you finished the quests and take the important stuff with you. As far as I can tell, you can't return to Milton anyways, so no need for a safehouse. Leave while you still have some condition left on your axe, and hopefully you find a whetstone early in the next map.

There's another hatchet in the barn at Paradise Meadows farm. There's a wolf in there, however, so be prepared.

Compared to the huge amount of clothes and other gear story mode throws at you, whetstones are actually rare. I've had two but unless theres more that are well hidden or Im just missing them I think thats about it and if youre spending a lot of time trying to do everything and using your knife and hatchet doing it youre going to run low on whetstone. I made the mistake of assuming knives and hatchets would be rarer than whetstones, brought my first hatchet up to nearly new and burnt through a lot of the first whetstone in the process.
