Can't warm up near campfire
I swear I used to be able to do that just yesterday. Today they don't seem to help me warm up. Is this a bug or am I missing something ? I tried standing closer but ended up getting burned.

If it's throughout the whole gameplay it may be a bug. But what's the "feel like" temperature on the Tab menu? It may be too cold outside for both your clothes and your campfire.

I didn't check that. I'll keep and eye on it next time.
It seems pretty counter-intuitive though. First of all, how cold would it have to be to not be able to get ANY warm from a campfire ? I should at least be able to stop myself from freezing. If it was too small couldn't I just make it bigger ?

I haven't really had a problem with outdoor fires, unless it's windy, but in my experience it takes quite a while to warm up. In fact the last time I slept outside, I did so because my only other option was the car, which wasn't helping with the cold at all. (condition was at like 50% from freezing)

So I lit a fire, and crouched next to it (not too close) and I saw the "WARMER" message pop-up. I then put enough wood in to last 10 hours or so, plopped my bedroll down right next to the fire, and slept for 8 hours. Worked great, woke up with a much higher condition.

I did this using the car as a wind break, so that probably helped. If you didn't have a wind break, then you might have been losing all of your heat?

Definitely try to get out of the wind behind something before lighting fire. Get behind a tree or rock and look for the warmer message.

Also, unless it's changed, make sure you're not using a fire log for warmth. They don't put out much heat.

At the current patch (v.170), I believe there are some characteristics to the type of firewood used for fuel. I believe there is one type that does not provide the same warmth, the rest deals with the duration it burns (unless the blizzard extinguishes it). And on that topic, the weather conditions can be as fickle as some if not most musicians. In the blink of an eye, you may have a blizzard in front of you and your campfire will be extinguished. On the same topic, it may be possible that the campfire is indeed warm, but the wind factor maybe be overbearing. But now I'm just making assumptions.

Rather than fighting the environment, unless it is an emergency I suggest to camp in a cave, areas that are not out in the open. My suggestion would be to go through a few game plays to allow yourself to be familiar with both maps, its unstable weather, and other factors. The rest is just trial by error and by experimental factors of an alpha game. Don't take it too seriously, just try to enjoy it for what it is and hope they make proper changes as people give constructive criticism, for its official release. That being said, maybe they'll improve campfires.

Also if you overlooked or haven't had the chance to find decent clothing. As you loot shelters you will find clothes that are made for the Alaskan wilderness. Be aware, they do deteriorate at an alarming rate in extreme weather. This information in also counter-intuitive because you wouldn't sleep out in the open if you've found shelters unless its an emergency. But it's a start and I'm sure you'll figure out what to do as you find resources to survive.

I died several times last games without a viewing cause during sleep?! Maybe Frozen? Is this a bug or just part of game? its to bad that there was just written ... failed into long dark... there was enough drinking and eating before but than died in sleep.... what did i wrong?
Ghost Engineer Dec 8, 2014 @ 12:39pm
I wasn't planning to sleep only to make an emergency fire since I got caught by the snowstorm half-way between shelters and that was my only option. I guess I'll be more careful next time and pay more attention to the wind since it seems that was my downfall. Twice :P

In previous versions, I have seen temps so low at night that two fires were needed to stop freezing to death. This was sheltered inside a broken barn, so was well out of the wind. The only problems I've noticed with fires and the wind is the fire just suddenly going out.

I think I had a similar experience.

I was exploring in the early morning, on the lake. It was so windy, my cold meter turned red, with right-pointing arrows on it. I assume that means it's getting even colder.

So I jumped into a fishing hut and lit a stove fire for about two hours. The cold meter stayed red, stuck at the same point. But I did notice that after I lit the stove and crouched next to the fire, the three right-pointing arrows on the cold bar turned into two left-pointing arrows.

I assume the fire was warming me up, but any warmth was effectively cancelled by the cold air.

The bar stayed red cold, not geting colder but not getting warmer. Eventually I ran off to find a real house even though the fire still had another 30 minutes to go.

Thanks for the feedback. We're having a look at the tuning on the various types of fuel. Each has its own characteristics for heat & range.

Same happened here, had a good fire going inside a cabin and still not warming up, I'm sure it's a bug. I don't care how cold it is, next to a fire should be the temp of the fire.

Nearly 7 years haha, might be the oldest I've had yet. But hey you can't win. You post a new topic and someone will say "why didn't you search the old threads?" Search the old threads, someone will say "why did you necro?" :happy_creep:

As an aside is there a jump mechanic in this game yet?

Nice necro guys. Start a new thread next time - this is from 6 years ago. All the info and issues here are outdated.
