"You faded into the Long Dark"
So I just made it to day 10 for the first time, receiving the achievement and whatnot, and died. I "faded into the Long Dark". That's it. I don't understand exactly what happened, so I'll try to elaborate a little further and maybe someone can give me an answer.

I had looted pretty much every possible joint at Mystery Lake that I could up to day 10 without finding the rifle OR hatchet, all except one place: the Dam. Having heard about "Fluffy" inhabating said dam, I was avoiding it at all costs since I had yet to acquire any sort of weapon. Seeing as the dam was my last resort, I had no other choice unless I wanted to starve/freeze to death without any way to acquire more wood to start fires without at least the hatchet. Sure I had plenty of other snacks to tide me over for a few more days but, you know how that goes.

Anyway, I finally gathered the courage to venture into the Dam and face Fluffy with nothing but my fists. Of course, I was hoping he wouldn't spawn but, sure enough he did. I survived not 1 but 2 bouts with him, killing him the 2nd attack. This left me with my condition at 9% having started at 100%. Bandaged up, antiseptics, antibiotics, GTG.

I proceeded to loot the entirety of the Dam, finding my rifle and hatchet along the way, and not daring attempt to return to my cabin at 9% health I threw my bedroll out, went to sleep for a few hours, and...

"You faded into the Long Dark".
New Sandbox or Quit.

WTF?!

Aside from my 9% condition, I made sure I was well-fed and hydrated before sleeping... so... WTF happened?

Maybe you got too cold?
If you fought fluffy, then your clothes could have been damaged to the point that you were not staying warm enough, and you died of cold.

I don't think so. I literally checked everything prior to sleeping, even my clothes. My shirt was the only thing badly damaged during the fight, and I even repaired it before going to sleep. I was perfectly warm there in the dam so there's no reason I should have froze to death while sleeping.

This just makes absolutely no sense, and it's rather irritating. But hey, I at least got to eat some of Fluffy before I died. =P

The only 3 things that would nail you like that are:

1) Cold - downstairs there can get really cold.

2) You were still bleeding. Thin chance it might be.

3) You got food poisoning but I doubt it - the char throws a verbal fit whenever that happens.

Watch out for the opening left by Fluffy... it's particularly cold around there (we are emulating the idea of cold getting in from the outside).

WARNING: The game loves to kill you in your sleep... or even while foraging.

Hinterlands doesn't want to hold your hand so much that...
They will let you freeze to death while gutting a wolf. Yes really. Because you wouldn't actually start getting so noticeably cold in real life that you might think to yourself, "Hmm, maybe I shoud stop harvesting this carcass and get somewhere warm".

The foraging mechanic is also suspect of being unfair. When I have time I will try to reproduce the effect.

eg. Player starts off full warm... goes out in only -15C and forages ONE piece of wood, which amounts to 20 mins, and returns out of the action to taking damage from FREEZING.

I found this out when I was running out of firewood trapped outside, was warmed up but lower condition 15%, then went out to forage for ONE piece of emergency wood, came back after the 20 mins FREEZING and damage down to 3%... whereby I died right beside the fire because I couldnt get warm enough fast enough.

Maybe i'm exaggerating the numbers because it was last night, but I do remember wondering why it would happen in such a short time, especially when it wasnt in a severe -51C blizzard, but only at about -10-15C.

Appreciate everyone's input. Still a mystery to me. I actually slept upstairs in the room that overlooks the downstairs area with all of the control panels in it and the workbench. Wouldn't of thought it might get too cold in there as when I went to sleep it was above 0 and my temperature gauge was all the way at the bottom.

Ah well. I guess next time I'll try sleeping in smaller increments when my condition gets so low. It was kind of funny actually... while sleeping I get "You made it!" 10 day achievement and then next thing I know I fade away...

Loving the game and this isn't going to keep me from trying again, that's for sure!

I have no idea if that's your case, just trying to figure out what could it be... but maybe you have to use antiseptic first, and then bandages, if you did the opposite? Maybe you died of infection? Also, you mentioned antibiotics... but for what? After a wolf struggle what you do is: use antiseptic to avoid infection, and then use the bandage. I have no idea if the order affects anything, but it might. In effect, one should disinfect before bandaging.

If the air in the cabin technically feels -1C to you , and you havent started a fire, it will count as you FREEZING, so if you go to bed, you may freeze to death in your sleep.

I'm not sure if the beds count as extra warmth rating, since they appear to be textured with blankets...

Its something Hinterflands may be able to answer.

I died once coming in from the cold but since the air inside was still -1C (percieved with all clothing on), I still suffered condition damage from it.

I took the antibiotics just to be on the safe side and also out of panic. I did not however take the antiseptic before bandaging... I bandaged first. But after all was said and done it didn't tell me I was infected or anything so not sure if the order matters as you said.

This may be the answer. While I was plenty warm when I went to sleep, since I slept thru the night the temperature probably dropped just enough that it brought me down from warm to cold and since my condition was already so low it wasn't enough to sustain even the slightest drop.

That's gotta be it because there was literally nothing else wrong with me. Lesson learned and on to striving for the next milestone!

Antiotics aren't important. Antiseptic is but the order you put it on doesn't seem important at all.

When your Cold meter is in "Freezing" territory, this is where you start to lose Condition damage. Your Cold meter will start to fill up towards Freezing as long as the temperature is below freezing (below 0C). If the temperature is above 0C ("Feels Like"), your Cold meter will gradually empty out as you "warm up". The rate at which you warm up is based on the temperature above freezing. This is why you warm up a lot more quickly next to a fire than in a +1C room.

So yes, if you were in an environment that was sub-freezing, you would eventually die from it.

That said, most indoor locations are above freezing, even if just barely. So, unless you were near an open window, you should have gradually recovered from Freezing. However, at 9% Condition, if you didn't start a fire and get out of the "Freezing" state quickly enough, you would continue taking damage and potentially die before you were out of the Freezing state (but that doesn't seem likely). For most interiors, as long as you have some minimal clothing, you will be fine and will gradually recover from Freezing.

The Control Room in the dam (where you slept) should be above Freezing.

Are you absolutely certain of this? I only ask because I have, so far, found or heard of at least four spots OTHER than the Trapper's Homestead, the Dam, and the Lookout Tower where the rifle may spawn. And they aren't all super obvious.

The rifle can also spawn in the darailed train.
