The Long Dark

The Long Dark

View Stats:
Please: Larger FOV range. 70 to 90 is too little.
The correct FieldOfView is a function of screen size and viewing distance. For TLD's 90° FOV, I would have to sit quite far away, different than for other games.

I bought it yesterday after digging *quite much* to find out if there is a FOV option, found out that there is one. After purchase, I saw that the max value is quite too low for my needs, so I am not too keen on playing the game, which leaves a sour taste.

If you can't give us a higher FOV range because of assets etc., then please at least make it possible for the users to "hack" it in somehow. Currently, the user001 file at Users\...\AppData\LocalLow\Hinterland\The Long Dark is encrypted. I don't want to toy with the savegame, I just need a higher FOV setting, about 110°, but I can see that the max value should be about 120.

I play with three monitors, and the current FOV setting makes this game look like I am playing with binoculars, it is impossible to navigate indoors.

*sigh*

There's *always* one of the "You don't need this."-zombies in these threads. There must be a factory somewhere. Reminds me of a certain kind of youth you meet in the streets where I live, no matter where in the country you are. They all know the same 15 words and all have the same behavior.

Hint: The feature is already built-in. The dev would have to change one byte, though. That part of the project needs its own phase, I guess.

...

Btw., the file content is Base64-encoded. However, the decoded file itself is also encrypted, with about average probability per value, so kinda like an AES-encrypted file. But AES decryption does not work because the file is not properly padded, so it must be something else. It could also be just a compressed file (e.g. 7z - not zip, that looks differently) with its head cut off.

Thanks for the feedback on the need for a higher max FOV. We're going to discuss it.
@alan.lawrance: Thanks, highly appreciated.

I also agree that it would be great to be able to adjust it more. I just got the game and tried it triple screened and like people have said it's tight. I didn't realize how much until I tried it with one screen.

Well, I'm also into the FOV option being larger, perhaps with a check box under 'advanced settings' to enable a wider FOV range.

But what *I* want to know is what the previous FOV default was - has that changed? Before the update that added the FOV option, I had less nausea when playing, and now I have more. It seems that FOV changes affect this, so I'm wondering what the prior FOV was.

I have twenty monitors set up in a 360 degree circle, and the current FOV settings make me literally thow up after only sixty seconds of play. Fix this now, or I WILL consider legal action.

The FOV range will increase to 150 if the aspect ratio is greater than 2.5.

To launch the game with a specific resolution, take a look at the tld_multiscreen.bat file (found where Steam installed the game).

How do you cope with older games?

I post equally obnoxius requests on their web sites as well.

Can you explain this more? I'm curious if the FOV is limited to 90 for techincal reasons or was simply a choice by the programmers. Many users will use something higher, but some may think 90 is fine. A range is meant to be flexible, please try to include something higher than 90 without having to resort to ini file tweaks. Thanks.

Why don't you play the game first before asking a stupid question. It goes up to 150

Am I missing how it goes to 150?
Yurkie Dec 26, 2014 @ 3:49pm
Ahh sorry. It looks like you have to be set to a aspect ration of greater than 2.5. Didn't realize that because I see it at 150. I am pretty sure it's a choice by the programmers. I know for me personally 90 was just fine when playing with one screen. It was when playing with three screens where I needed a much higher aspect ratio.
