XBOX Controller Support
Added an Xbox Controller profile for "The Long Dark (Sandbox Alpha v183)" to Keysticks software. http://keysticks.net/site/default.aspx. The Profile is listed as the title above.

I have created the following keyboard layout.
LB = Crouch {note: reassign L.Ctrl in game key as 'E'}; RB = Tab Menu
LT = Left Mouse Button; RT = Right Mouse Button
Left Stick = W,A,S,D movement.
Left Stick Press Down = Run. {note: reassign L.Shift in game key as 'Q' to Run}
Right Stick = Mouse/Look Movement.
A = Reload; X = Holster; Y = Match; B = Inventory;
DigiPad:
Up = 1 {Flare}, Right = 2 {Lantern} Down = 4 {Decoy}, Left =3 {Firearm}
Back = Esc/Pause; Start = Enter/null

Nice! I hadn't bothered with a controller for this game as of yet as I imagined all the menu diving would be painful using that right stick...

it is a little uncanny, true, but usuable indeed. I have updated the profile to support combined buttons and item list scrolling. Hold the RB button down while in item menus is open and then use the right stick to behave like a mouse up/down scroll. Also digipad gets extended with yet unused keys 5678. I am looking to create a comunity profile.

I use a hybrid style. I like the xbox controller for movement, spamming attacks, shortcuts for running, crouching, whipping out the rifle etc. But usually reach for the mouse for drop-down interfacing and aiming the rifle.

I use the xpadder keyboard emulator with an xbox 360 controller.

95% of the games I play on pc I use the controller for, normally won't play games without one. Made an exception for this game as it's just too damn good to not play, however would love native controller support aswell. I have pinnacle and do sometimes use that with games but most of the time I find that any emulator is not as good as native.

So far, I am empressed with this xbox tool. It uses the XBox XNA framework to directly manage all aspects of the XBox Controller. Combining keys and the likes, to fine tuning speed settings etc. I can even use my controller to manage my steam client with big screen and desktop. That is nice too.

What I would like to know is what most people would like..

What I am going to configuring in layout:

Left stick = movement. {W,A,S,D}
Left Strick press down = Crouch {L.Ctrl}
Digipad = numbered items 1-4 (5-8 via RB hold down)
Right stick = mouse
LB = Strafe/Run {L.Shift}
LT = Left mouse click
RB = Tab menu (hold down to activate secondary key options).
RT = Right Mouse Click
A = Reload
B = Inventory
X = Holster
Y = Strike Match
Start = Enter
Back = Esc

Secondary keys (via RB hold down)
Right key stick = scroll mouse button up/scroll mouse button down
A = F8 debug screenshot
X = F9 screenshot
Y = F10 high res. screenshot.
B = Esc
Digipad: 5-8 (not yet implemented in game)

What I need to add: An general ESC button for menu actions (such as sleep) when you simply want to cancel that. Esc is there, but that is not a handy place to have it.
Note to DEVS: I wish you had implemented a return key as secondary to left clicking in the menu. Could have helped alot in this case.

Updated the profile for any takers. It now has a power attack on the wolfs! You get to walk away more often than ending up dead. Holding down RB + RT during wolf attack and watch that fluffy's health bar slide away! Note: Profile is still work in progress, but 95% usuable.

Thank you. I will definitely be trying this out.

Nice!
They have promised controller support in the future, but this isn't a bad workaround for now!

Your welcome Guys. Drop some feed back for overal improvements.

NOTE: Do keep an eye out on the profile in the download list of keysticks for tis DATE. The more recent it is, implies I have re-uploaded minor changes to it. I am not uploading new profile versions unless there are significant changes to The Long Dark itself.

I think with this controller setup, i think the Devs could easily port the game over to the xbox one if they wanted to, yeah i'm sure some of you think us console peasents don't deserve this gem but i mean come on, we need something that isn't minecraft, something that actually provides a challenge.

Agree, will play with controller it is much better.

Beginning to feel like they forgot that native controller support was a promised feature. :/

I'm looking forward to playing the new updates, but I've been holding off to play with a controller.

Would be nice mainly cuz i get 30fps outside with high end machine (yes i read the update news they are working hard on it) playing with controller would feel better with im outside with 30fps.

One thing I find incredibly annoying about the xbox 360 for PC is the green guide button in the middle of the device. I invariably accidentally hit it in the wolf QTE. It brings up the xbox help widget thing which helps me by simultaneously hijacking me to WIndows - several expletives and seconds later I am quite dead.
