Is there a way to use a knife or a hatchet as a weapon against the wolfes?

I only have played this game a few hours, and so far it is very promising, but I've found a knife and a hatchet, but cant figure out how to equip them. Or, are they only for the use of cutting meet etc.?

They are just tools mostly. But in the latest patch they can now improve the odds in your favor when fighting the wolfs, but it degrade them at the same time so it is a double edged sword :)

Simply having them in your inventory will boost damage against wolves in the attack QTE. They're not visible (yet?) but they're helping keep you alive. Alas, you can't use them as a weapon outside of the QTE right now, so you do have to enter the "struggle" scene in order to kill a wolf with them.

For the record, the hatchet is a better weapon than the knife, and the prybar is better than either of them.

At present no. Like Urist said, when you get into a QTE battle with a wolf the game chooses which weapon to use in your defense, starting with the knife and then the hatchet, then the prybar. So far in my experience only the knife will kill a wolf. So the knife is pretty much your best friend in this game. It would be great if Hinterland added crafted melee weapons, like a sharp stick, club, bow and arrow. Something. The rifle just isn't a reliable tool and is limited by ammo. Anyhoo.. hope that helps :)

Oh believe me, the prybar is a very effective weapon. The damage output is far higher than the hatchet and knife, and almost makes up for the sheer weight of the darned thing.

Awesomeness :) Thanks Urist! I've never used the prybar against a wolf. Just my knife and my hatchet and was really surprosed to find my hatchet just scared it away multiple times. Not one kill. I was like wtf yo lol Figured my hatchet would take it's head off in a few wacks lol Nice to know the prybar is lethal just in case :D

In my experiences, it take two "struggles" to kill a wolf.
No matter the knife or the hatchet, wolves always got away at the first time.
The second time will kill it.
Maybe strengthen up the move will kill it in one time? I don't know.
