How to get to the Hunting Cabin: The Long Dark
Basically I have been trying FOREVER to get to the hunting cabin, when I finally did I managed to work out a easy trick to get you there faster.

Step.1 Get to the CAMP OFFICE this is a fairly easy place to get to its near the big lake and it is fairly easy to find. I also recommend stopping off at it and resupplying but yeah, I wont go into much detail where it is because I'm just telling you how to get to the hunting cabin.

Step.2 Now that you are at the CAMP OFFICE you want to head to the right of it from the front door away from the lake and to a railway. If you look up the railway line you will see a arch which is called the TUNNEL COLAPSE. Walk towards it and keep facing it directly, once you reach the sort off derailed train thing right in front of the arch turn right and walk in that direction

Step.3 Keep walking right from the TUNNEL COLAPSE and you will (if you went in the right direction) arrive at a place called MAX'S LAST STAND. I will warn you now I seemed to encounter wolfs very frequently around this point so I advise you press 1 and get a flare ready if you need it.

Step.4 Yet again you need to keep going right from the TUNNEL COLAPSE when you reach MAX'S LAST STAND (I should note if you get lost backtrack to the lake and start again, if you are running low on supplies restock at the lake.) If you did everything right and went in the right direction you will arrive at like a small lake with a cabin with a smoking chimney up the top!

Step.5 You made it congratulations! Now that you are here just find the door to the cabin and enter it! This cabin is a gold mine of stuff! you will find everything you need to start exploring safely! Most of all this cabin contains the hunting rifle and five bullets!

BONUS THING I JUST WANT TO MENTION AND JUST BECAUSE I CAN.1 I strongly advise making thing place your base, its a very nice place to stay and its just in a good position in general.

BONUS THING I JUST WANT TO MENTION AND JUST BECAUSE I CAN.2 Inside the hunting cabin is a safe, for me this safe didn't contain anything very special, just some painkillers and 1 can of tinned food but anyway this is how to get inside it. The safe doesn't have a fixed code, it is random, but there is a way to get into it and its very easy! slowly tap D until you unlock lock one, then slowly tap A until the second lock unlocks and finally slowly tap D again until the final lock opens and BAM you opened a safe! Feel good about yourself!

BONUS THING I JUST WANT TO MENTION AND JUST BECAUSE I CAN.3 This is just a bit of general advise, try not to use the gun for hunting, you can get lots of food from doing it but its just wasting bullets, those bullets could save you from a wolf or you could use it to kill fluffy in the bunker. I would suggest learning the wolf killing technique, basically you get a wolf to follow you then lure it to a deer, let the wolf kill the deer, come back a bit later and harvest the deer's corpse.

BONUS THING I JUST WANT TO MENTION AND JUST BECAUSE I CAN.4 Once you have a gun I advise that you try kill fluffy as the bunker is another one of those gold mines.

Well its very hard to find out where you are sometimes and I just wrote this to make it very descriptive so that if you are in a snowstorm or something like that this "wall of text" as you put it just makes it easier to find it

EDIT: Oh and this is my first post xD

As far as making it your base goes... The Trapper's Homestead is a little remote, but in a very good area as far as wildlife and plantlife. Deer and Rabbit spawns, plus Smokey the Bear. Maple and birch to the North. In my game, there's not a lot of wood nearby, though.

I use it as a secondary location (I also use the Dam as a seconday location), where I'll camp out a few nights before returning to the Camp Office. I like the CO's central location, whereas the Trapper's Homestead is in South East corner of the map.

Warning

The rifle does not always spawn there, so dont get your hopes up to high,, The rifle can be in several different spawn areas

I think Trappers is a good place to hang out and craft the wolf coat, deer pants and rabbit mitts. I don't go there until I have some basics like fire starters, cloth, better clothes as it is a little remote.

Nice tips. I just trekked down there while eyeballing between the map and my location, looking for landmarks. The Trapper's pad is a wonderful site to chill, kill and grill.

This made it a lot easier to find it. Thanks a lot~

Be aware that the wolf will generally leave nothing to harvest if left alone until it is done. You need to chase it away or kill it, if you want meat, hide and guts from the deer corpse. In Pilgrim, that is not an issue since the wolf will flee, but in Voyager and Stalker it can be one.

If approaching the Trapper's Homestead from the direction of the Unnamed Pond, nominally from the North, be aware that the zone boundary (black rock cliffs) will be on your right (i.e. west) with a big snow-covered hill ahead and to the left. Walk up the hill, keeping the cliffs to the right, and when you crest the hill (maybe a bit farther) down below the Homestead should come into sight, provided you're not caught in a blizzard.
