How many shots to kill a bear?
I got three shots into a bear last night before being mauled down to 9% health and having him walk away. One beard lichen bandage later, at 8% health, I took three more shots. One was clearly a miss. The second might have been. The third should have hit.

How many good, clean shots does it take to knock out a bear, on average?

as many as it takes bra

honestly you best bet to to crawl you way onto a tall rock or someplace it can get you if it tries to eat your face, and shoot it from there... then wait for it to bleed out... if you just stand there shooting at it you could go through five shots and not know if youve got him or not

My personal best was 4 shots, with at least 1 head shot but it could have been 2 all without getting mauled. On PV down the path from the radio tower on a clift facing down hill near where the first water crossing is on that path. 2 body shots from above then 2 face shots as I was being charged, the fact that the bear had to run all the way around, giving me that 2nd shot and then inline at me for the head/face shots made this a good hunting location. Im thinking, does our wildlife run up trees or stairs yet?

I dropped one with two shots ~ and then died trying to get down off the rock I'd been using to keep from getting mauled lol. Honestly didn't know whether to laugh or cuss about the whole thing! I did have the advantage of his being much closer/in range when the first shot was fired. The best I've done otherwise was three shots, and without a scratch. It seems that if you are above them on a hill there is some slight advantage. I don't know if they have trouble seeing or if I may have been partially hidden by a tree, but I've tried to take any others from that same uphill stance.

On the flip side, I hit one five times, got mauled, crawled back to the fishing cabin to heal up, and hunted for it for two days. Three days later at the Quonset station I saw one just ambling along the road. I fired one shot, immediately entered the station, and sighed. Later that afternoon I walked out and there it layed. Obviously it took six shots!

At least three, if you are talking about the very aggressive bear in Pleasant Valley near the waterfalls. Normally I shoot him twice in the chest and once in the face and he stills leaves me badly wounded/mauled at 6%, which I have finally learned how to survive! NOTE: Check your clothing before trying to walk to safety! Anyway, I got my Bear Bedroll and I intend on avoiding the Bears at all costs. I stick to the wolves, deer and rabbits.

This was on a hillside in Coastal, leading up to the Abandoned Lookout.

All you need is one shot. Shoot him, run and hide (or indoors), wait an hour, and he'll bleed out and die.

As Marne said, it only takes one shot (hit obviously). No matter where you hit them, they will bleed out in about an hour. It's best to hide if you can until he walks/runs away and visually track him from a distance until he drops. If you are unlucky enough to get mauled, just patch yourself up and get some sleep and come back and look for him the next day. I've never seen them stray far. Oh, and always remove your clothes before shooting him, otherwise, if you get mauled he will shred them. Yeah, I know it's cold out, but if you are in good condition, you can go for 5 mins without freezing. Just remember to put them back on afterwards.

There's no need to avoid them if you (a) are near a decent camp site (b) have bandages/antiseptic, and (c) are currently in good condition. You'll survive and the rewards make it more than worthwhile.

Jeez, I hope the devs fix the "naked fighting" glitch. I know the game is not 100% realistic, but there really should be more penalty for being naked in below-freezing temperatures, and for fighting alpha predators while naked.

It could be a simple fix:

1) any clothing in your inventory gets shredded when you get mauled by a bear or attacked by a wolf, whether it's equipped or not.

2) being attacked by a wolf/bear while naked = automatic death.

Did a bear in two headshots just now - no waiting :)

I have killed them with as little as 1 shot and up to 5 shots.

1 shot. I am at the PV farmhouse - there is a bear that often spawns outside. I try aim for a headshot (killed him outright once). I then quickly close the screen door; go to bed for a few hours; they often bleed out but sometimes run off. I think I read something about a critical hit modifier in the new update but I'm not 100%. Don't waste bullets on bears - shooting a bear 3/4 times is a waste of ammo if time will bleed them out.

it just happened something wierd: I was in trapper's house, sitting on the hill, just in front of the door, waiting for the bear to come close enough to shoot and run inside the house.
So, the bear is close enough (somewhere between the house and the green shack), I aim to the neck/head.
One shot ... and the bear died right there O_o never happened before ....

does the bow work on bears?
