Saving Time On Meat Harvesting
Most of you probably already know the trick about parking a campfire over a frozen carcass, whittling out the guts and hide while giving the meat time to thaw out, making harvesting quicker, etc.

There are two other distinctions I've noticed when harvesting meat that I'll point out, in case it helps anyone along the way ...

1) If the corpse is fresh, make sure to use your knife when harvesting. I've noticed that the game defaults you to handaxe if you have both, and the handaxe takes TWICE as long to harvest fresh meat as the knife does.

2) If the corpse is frozen, use the handaxe when harvesting. If you don't feel like going through the trouble of setting up a campfire, make sure to use the handaxe when harvesting your meat. It should be the default so I guess you probably don't need to make sure of it quite so much. But harvesting frozen meat with the knife will take you TWICE as long.

Good luck out there, and happy harvesting !

great tip! thanks for posting it! :)
Excercize caution however, as a frozen corpse takes longer to decay while frozen, but will rot quickly when thawed. This isn't as big of a deal for small game, but for bears I would suggest keeping the campfire at a safe distance and letting the bear freeze over, as it can take days to process the bear carcass.

Truth, and good point. I found that out the hard way trudging back the 2nd day with previously thawed out meat from the day before. Some of it spoiled before I could even get it into the fireplace :( Got most of it, though !

As for me It is enough to choose hatchet and see what time it will take, and select knife for comparison.

So build a fire beside a frozen deer before harvesting?

I litterally just witnessed a wolf take down a deer, and since I'm on Pilgrim I ran over and harvested 8kg of meat from it! First time doing that and had no idea you could get that much from them. People playing without firing guns might want to watch out for that.

My tactice with bear harvesting is to harvest in 5 to 10kg bits, drop that on the ground, repeat til harvested then start the transport. Store the uncooked and cooked outdoors til ready to use. You can let the uncooked go til it is 50% if necessaty since cooking adds 50% condition.

So do you store the uncooked and cooked meat outdoors in the snow or in a container? I didn't know that meat could freeze in the game after processing. I always put it in the freezer if I can.

You can store the meat on the ground/in the snow. No need for a container. Raw and cooked meat will degrade about 1% a day. Inside the degradation rate is faster - 6% for raw and 3% for cooked.

So far, it appears that, unless used as a decoy, wolves and bears won't eat the meat that is outside and not in a container. That may change in the future, with future updates. But until that happens, the freezer is just outside your dwelling. :)

containers are split into inside and outside containers. you can store meat in a freezer and it will spoil all the same(no power remember?)

a good "refrigirator" are the fishing cabins in mystery lake, car trunks(yes, ew...) and frozen bodies(yes.... i know! disgusting...)
This is a very, very old thread that could be confusing to current players. Locking it up. Thanks!
