Too many TIMBERWOLVES after the UPDATE
Timberwolves at desolation point, timberwolves at coastal highway, timberwolves at pleasant valley, timberwolves at timberwolf mountain, timberwolves EVERYWHERE. Why did Hinterland make timberwolves spawn points everywhere? Who said it was a good idea? Who asked for this? Yes, it's not a bad mechanic for a story game, yes it's not a bad mechanic for locations with especially valuable loot, but wolf pack progression mechanics are not interesting. These are not mechanics that add action and challenge to the game. It's just a dull mechanic that is annoying and makes players go around the place where they spawn. Even more annoying is this mechanic along with the game “feature” when wolves can spawn just behind the player's back where they weren't before. It just takes more time and doesn't bring anything interesting to the game. Please bring back the old forest wolf spawning system!

There is a explainer thread on the online forums that goes into timberwolf balance as well as a few other things (spoilers possible).

Which difficulty you've been playing?

What pistol? I play interloper mode. I can only throw rocks at them, but that has no effect on the progress bar whatsoever

It's not a balance fix, they just made multiple spawn points for timberwolves and spawn points for regular wolves where before there were only timberwolves. The game is already very tiring to move around locations, especially when your inventory is overloaded. And now you just need to spend more time to get around the timberwolves

The post says they'll be reducing spawn chance in the patch coming next week, maybe that will help.

I'm very hopeful, too

sorry to sound rude here, but this way of communicating makes it so difficult to actually figure out if something is intended behavior or a bug. raph says timberwolves used to be limited to 2 regions (which is wrong; sundered pass made it 3), but the wildlife refresh expanded it to 4-5 regions (well, is it 4 or is it 5?). meanwhile, the wiki lists 9 regions with timberwolf spawns now. i haven't been to all those regions since the update but from what i've seen in my game and read in forums, raph's statement seems to be incorrect. so now what?

I've never seen anyone else suggest there are timberwolves at Desolation Point, and I haven't seen any there myself in my time there. Are you sure that you really saw timberwolves there?

I always read that as 4-5 new zones that would sometimes get timberwolves, not 4-5 total including the old ones. Raph does like to be vague in order to not give everything away though. He likes surprises.

That being said, the update has been out for a little while. It's certainly possible that there's something I've missed, but from everything I've seen and heard both myself and from other people I'm getting pretty confident that there are 3 new zones with multiple new potential timberwolf spawns (TWM, PV, and CH) , and 3 new zones with a single potential spawn location. (AC, BR, and HRV)

More specifics and my opinions on them ahead:

Timberwolf Mountain doesn't usually have timberwolves, but when it does they are a problem. It's like halfway to being a timberwolf zone now. Pleasant Valley and Coastal Highway have the most outside of the actual timberwolf zones, but they're all out in the open in places that are easy to spot from a distance and easy to avoid.

The Ash Canyon spawn is in a location that has a good view from nearly ever place you could approach it from. It could disrupt your plans, but you're not likely to just walk into them. Broken Railroad, well, let's just say that between the new timberwolf spawn and the new moose spawn locations I think Hunter's Lodge is going to be a lot less popular. Hushed River Valley only has a spawn down in Moose Valley. That's so obscure and out of the way it's almost more of an easter egg than an actual gameplay thing.

Overall I think that the 4-5 number they gave is counting the single spawn regions as partial new additions, which some people won't like, but if you're trying to keep things vague on purpose it seems fair to me.

Deleted a few comments that were completely off topic. Please keep things on topic. This thread topic is about timberwolves, not the cougar. If you want to talk about the cougar, there is an entire pinned thread dedicated to it in the Tales From The Far Territory subforum.

Thanks.

Here's what baffles me about the choice to introduce timberwolves more widely. They have metrics to show how much time players spend in different locations. They must know that a significant number of players avoided BI and Blackrock completely, presumably because they find that it's not fun. How do you take that information and think "we should take the most significant element of the regions being avoided and disperse it across other maps"? It feels as if they want a large number of players to have less fun.

According to wiki they have been seen in 10 regions (BI and Blackrock included)

Edit : 9 regions not 10

In CH they appear too near the Fishing Village, in the ice area.

The only place that they are annoying like in BI Cannery is in FM Crystal Lake, hampering the access to the Fishing Hut.

What is need take caution is the normal wolves now blocking some paths in unusual locations.
