Game without the DLC offers a lot of fun on it's own and is definitely not 'needed' imo. I recommend getting it if you feel like you need more things in the game, otherwise just play as you are and enjoy. I have the DLC, but haven't even done the Tales yet - having plenty of fun as I have been since Early Access years ago. New items are nice, but mostly niche and not necessary - especially on interloper loot settings. Once you've done everything else in the game and exhausted general gameplay, I would recommend getting the DLC just to spice things up a bit with new regions and tasks to complete.
Last time i played The long dark was 4 yearss ago, i tried to play story mode but was too busy with exams. Now i saw news abot the update which bbrings the last chapter to the wintermute story, about the pilot guy, and i want to play the game and complete it.
I dont really like the survival sandbox mode, i enjoy playing story or challenges, so whats exactly this DLC will do the game? is this like the second story dlc or no

Wintermute isn't completed yet, this release was for DLC Tales part 6, completing the DLC. Tales is a small story content addon (The Tales themselves), new items, cougar and the trader, who also has a small story to complete. For Wintermute to be finished, you need to wait a while longer still. I don't remember exactly when the planned release was estimated to happen, since I don't play story mode myself - sometime next year if I remember correctly. The next part of Wintermute will complete the story mode of the game, Tales are in the DLC and are a completely separate thing and by no means a main feature of survival mode. :)

Edit: I forgot to add, that maybe it's important to clarify that the DLC is only for survival mode, it doesn't touch Wintermute at all. If you don't like playing sandbox survival, then the DLC probably isn't gonna magically make you like it. It does indeed add a story elements of its own, but it's certainly nothing like Wintermute from what I've seen and read.

I had a good experience without the Tales DLC.
The DLC will add some more items in the world (food, recipes, ptarmigan birds), so it's worth having if you like the game but not mandatory to enjoy it.

18 months ago the dlc was completely optional, now the game is dogwater without it since most of the studios' efforts have gone towards the dlc. Not complaining, mind you, I would absolutely buy it if I didn't own it.

Been playing Survival off-and-on for years without the DLC. Certainly entertaining. The DLC was a present and yes, it definitely is worth it. New places, things to find and do, meet new people. Well, not the last one but you can talk to someone over the radio now. Even do some bartering.

If you don't play Survival the DLC won't give you anything, but if you don't play Survival you're missing out on a lot.

i would argue it doesnt add any more fun. theres 3 zones but they're terrible to play on with their weird mechanics. theres a new magic fog that comes out of nowhere and gives you insomnia, theres gas in caves that suffocate you, theres magic goo the eats your shoes, zombie wolves that death charge you, cooking mechanics which are a great rp element but not really necessary even on loper, and a travois that cant run over a spec of dust on the ground. the base game is nearly perfect, the DLC is a waste of money imo
