What's up with the music?
I started playing this beautiful game a few years ago, I picked it up because I saw some gameplay from the MikeBurnFire youtube channel, right around the time the Blackrock area and relative story chapter was added. I went through the whole Wintermute story, and I liked it a lot. Didn't really touch the survival mode back then, but now, with the new update, the full release of Tales, and the addition of the Trader and safehouse customisation, I went back into it to try the new stuff out, and I noticed that the music is...different?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I clearly remember the soundtrack having some short but absolutely beautiful tracks with guitars in it, almost country style but definitely more atmospheric rather than anything else, and I loved it, it fit perfectly. Now, as I'm moving through Mistery Lake, starting from Milton, the only kind of music I hear is extremely short, with no real instrument, just sort of a ominous ambience that plays for just a few seconds and fades away. It sounds like the music you get when you're followed by a wolf, but I have passive wildlife on, and it's clearly not that. Was is always like this? Is the actual music only for the Wintermute story, while the survival mode gets a different soundtrack?

I don't know much about story mode but I think it and sandbox have separate soundtracks

There are different tracks for Survival Mode and Wintermute Story Mode, but there is also a bug some people have been reporting where some sounds and music seem to be looping (playing on repeat) or not playing at all. If you look at the OSTs (Music for The Long Dark Volumes 1 & 2) they list which tracks are for Wintermute, and which ones are for Survival Mode.

thank you very much for your answer! it's a shame, I REALLY liked the wintermute soundtrack, I felt it fit perfectly.

The ost on steam is messed up and the problem is known by Hinterland. The problem will be fixed when the album 3 will be purchasable if I remember well a post form Hinterland.
You can find the correct musics on the local files directly from this steam music player.

By the way, the only guitar music I remember is in the episode three when Astrid was carrying a person on her shoulders

The OSTs are not playing in the correct order through the Steam Music Player. That has nothing to do with music and ambient sounds looping or being absent from the game, since it happens on my XBox copy of the game and on Switch too. But the OP can still look at the lists of tracks to see which ones are Survival Mode, and which are Wintermute- they can look at the Store pages for the OSTs to see the lists if they don't own the OSTs.

The OSTs seem to be playing the correct tracks in the correct order if you get them on Bandcamp. Steam isn't the only place to get the OSTs, and you can play them on just about any media player: https://hinterlandstudio.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-the-long-dark-volume-one https://hinterlandstudio.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-the-long-dark-volume-two

It's my favorite game music. It's so good to hear real instruments playing. The music is so simple but gets you so much into the mood of the game, its the best thing in wintermute imo. .. except I didn't much care for the timberwolf theme.
That said, the music in survival is also very very good. Particularly the ash canyon theme and the ones that come with the far territory regions.
