Intestinal parasites help
Playing on Stalker and not used to having this. I used to harvest a whole bear and the food would keep me fed for a long time, giving me time to craft/repair/explore etc. I got the parasite warning 1% just from eating one piece of wolf meat.

Is there a way of countering this? Most of the food in this game comes from carnivores as there are more of them and they are easy to kill. Can i keep eating this meat as long as it doesn't go to 100%? Does time also reduce it?

It goes over time but you can catch parasites way before reaching 100%, I personally usually stop at 4%. In the other hand it's not that bad of a disease at all, if you got enough medecines and meanwhile you got the disease you can not got it twice... So you can feed with pred meat at will.

nmm ok, thanks.

Typically I'll eat one big bear steak every 24 hours and I never got it. The risk clears after 24 hours.

This week was my first time with IP in almost 1400 hours...I guess I was due. How? Typical hubris and stupidity.

As micah said, the first 15 days are not that big a deal. Plenty of time to stock up on meds and set yourself up with firewood and a shelter. Those last 5 days are a killer though; especially on Loper.

Well i guess that guy who drank his own pee doesn't seem so crazy right now.

Intestinal parasite risk occurs when cooked predatory meat is consumed. It starts at 1% for the first piece/bite, goes to 4% on the next, 9% on the third and then rises by 5% for each additional piece. I put piece/bite there because the risk escalates with every instance of consumption. It is not based on the weight of meat consumed but the act.

The risk is a % chance that when the game tests for getting the affliction (about every 24 hours when there is risk) otherwise the risk passes harmlessly. This is one of the few instances where % risk actually means % risk as a probability (RNG/dice roll).

There is no way to mitigate the risk. It is a calculated risk to consume cooked predator meat before one has acquired Level 5 cooking where, for cooked predator meat, there is no longer a risk of intestinal parasites.

One final point. The Level 5 "immunity" to IP is for COOKED wolf/bear meat only. Taking even an "accidental" bite of raw predator meat bypasses that "immunity" because the meat was not COOKED and has a comparatively enormous risk (like 73% for one bite). Be careful.

Naturally, if one plays in a certain modes, such as Pilgrim or Voyager (I think for Voyager), IP does not matter.

You been digging through config files or something? How do you know all this nerdling? ;)

They need to make Moose spawns as frequent as bears imo, then we won't have the issue :)

It was relatively common knowledge from the time when intestinal parasites was introduced because the devs didn't like the fact that wolves and bears were often the primary meat source not game animals, so they put in something to discourage it.

Be glad that one possible outcome was dropped. That was that the intestinal parasite risk would remain (not dissipate) until the character came down with intestinal parasites. By probability that meant eventually it would happen just a matter of when. That was a bit too punitive and was, in effect, a ticking time bomb. Not good. Good thing it was dropped in favor of daily tests to see if it happened or passed harmlessly.

Good to know, thanks! It's been a while since I last had it.

I believe the 10 days thing came about on Custom Loper settings, as opposed to vanilla Loper (20 days).

IP does matter on Voyager. I got twice by grabbing and eatting the raw meat instead of the cook meat. Opps ans 24 hour of healing .

Yep, this is true. I hope they change this. I got it in my custom game a while a go (from 4% risk) and was surprised it was 10 days. Still pain. Hate IP.

Vanilla loper is 20 days. An absolute PITA.

The majority of players play Voyager, just look at the stats.
No sorry but i meant on this forum post, mainly including me.

There is actually a way to countering IP. It's a cooking skill. I think when you reach top rank you don't get IP anymore if you cook meat.

You should check out Turkeysteam on youtube - he's just started doing a series of livestream Sundays where he's deliberately gotten parasites on day 1 in a HRV start. Here's yesterdays first stream

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVh7DU1r2tY

He did a series a few years back called Room Mates where he did the same to show how its not as big a problem as it might seem.
