This week was my first time with IP in almost 1400 hours...I guess I was due. How? Typical hubris and stupidity.
As micah said, the first 15 days are not that big a deal. Plenty of time to stock up on meds and set yourself up with firewood and a shelter. Those last 5 days are a killer though; especially on Loper.
The risk is a % chance that when the game tests for getting the affliction (about every 24 hours when there is risk) otherwise the risk passes harmlessly. This is one of the few instances where % risk actually means % risk as a probability (RNG/dice roll).
There is no way to mitigate the risk. It is a calculated risk to consume cooked predator meat before one has acquired Level 5 cooking where, for cooked predator meat, there is no longer a risk of intestinal parasites.
One final point. The Level 5 "immunity" to IP is for COOKED wolf/bear meat only. Taking even an "accidental" bite of raw predator meat bypasses that "immunity" because the meat was not COOKED and has a comparatively enormous risk (like 73% for one bite). Be careful.
Naturally, if one plays in a certain modes, such as Pilgrim or Voyager (I think for Voyager), IP does not matter.
They need to make Moose spawns as frequent as bears imo, then we won't have the issue :)
Be glad that one possible outcome was dropped. That was that the intestinal parasite risk would remain (not dissipate) until the character came down with intestinal parasites. By probability that meant eventually it would happen just a matter of when. That was a bit too punitive and was, in effect, a ticking time bomb. Not good. Good thing it was dropped in favor of daily tests to see if it happened or passed harmlessly.
I believe the 10 days thing came about on Custom Loper settings, as opposed to vanilla Loper (20 days).
Yep, this is true. I hope they change this. I got it in my custom game a while a go (from 4% risk) and was surprised it was 10 days. Still pain. Hate IP.

He did a series a few years back called Room Mates where he did the same to show how its not as big a problem as it might seem.
