update: auto-walk now works after checking settings in TLD (all were correct), backing out of the game and Steam (after saving) and then re-starting my PC. Annoying but it worked for me.
AUTOWALK NO LONGER WORKS
Some players may have found their settings changed after updating, which deactivates the Autowalk setting.
To re-enable this setting, please visit Options > Accessibility > Autowalk > Enable, and verify that the Autowalk key binding is set correctly under Options > Key Bindings.
Problem is, Steam is horribly buggy and broken (even more so after the recent update, but that's another story). I've actually had to disable my controller type entirely by hacking Steam's config.vdf file as mentioned in this comment:

Since I did that, my controller worked just fine, because TLD and most of my other games support it natively.
