Getting firewood outdoors
After doing a bit of tree hugging and examening the menus and the axe in inventory, I find no way of chopping up wood for fuel. So the only way to get fuel, is to find it on the ground now outdoors? I know about the new mechanic for indoors, but have so far found no firewood outdoor (have not searched for long, but am curious if I am missing something in the new setup).
Great job on the recent update. Snow looks delicious and really messes with your sight in the dark. I almost shot a car, as I was convinced it was a bear :/

Ah, just saw an answer for this in a different post. Wood does need to be found on the ground. Mean.

There's sticks, which are picked up directly, branches, which are broken down into sticks, cedar limbs which are broken down into cedar firewood, and fir limbs that are broken down into fir firewood

It seems strange that we can't just walk up to a tree... and chop wood from it.

i like the new idea of gathering sticks on the ground BUT also would like the ability to chop wood with my woodchuck again :)

Too much trees but Why there is no possibility to get logs?

Sticks & limbs respawn? If yes, do they do daily? Because having to scout all map to get wood next day or to go to another map for wood is a bit of a drastic change (especially since you can't throw a stone without hitting a tree....).

Beth responded to me in another thread, yes the sources of wood will respawn. I don't know how long it takes but eventually it will. So far I am actually enjoying looking around for wood... **living up to my name**

Just cruise around and pick up every stick you see, break every branch you see into sticks,

Careful cutting up the cedar, its takes a chunk out of your hatchets % every time, like 3% for every limb you cut out of which you get 3 cedar logs and a tinder plug.

From what i can tell so far, after playing about 3 hours since the update, fir limbs are rare, so my advice is to hoard them like gold, since you need them to repair your tools. I have not repaired anything since the update, but assume it still holds true.

Trying to cut down a tree with a hatchet... not a good idea.

Yes, sticks and limbs respawn. It will take a couple of days.

I always thought the old system could be modified by just using a proximity measurement, i.e. the "forage wood" option would not be available unless you were close to a tree. That would have stopped people from foraging from their porch naked, but it would not have made it quite as ridiculous as it is now. I definitely agree that the disconnect between what we can see and what we can do is pretty stark right now.

If anything, I'm finding they're respawning way too quickly. I spotted a juicy fir branch while I was out stalking a deer, marked it for recovery after I was done cooking said deer, and found it wasn't there the next day. Turns out the whole wood spawn had reshuffled overnight.

It's on the list to make wood resupply after heavy winds and blizzards, like irl! :)

Ah, interesting. That does make some sense.

Yup, dev told me so on the item degradation thread. Not sure it'll make wood scarcer though.

Considering how frequent heavy winds and blizzards are... I doubt it. Sticks, at least, seem to be plentiful enough, though it'd probably take a good few trips to build a respectable stash of the juicier (and rarer) fir and cedar logs.
