But I think this does mean a change is needed for story mode. Forget about bush pilot William Mackenzie and doctor Astrid Greenwood. The day after the Nathan's hot dog eating contest, Joey Chestnut is taking flying lessons over Northern Canada when the geomagnetic storm hits.
Disoriented from the crash, he now believes he is on tour in Canada, and competing to win the five titles: Mystery Lake Fish Eating Contest, Coastal Highway Rabbit Eating Contest, Desolation Point Deer Eating Contest, Pleasant Valley Bear Eating Contest, and TWM Wolf Eating Contest.
Only after eating his way to victory in all five contests can he climb to the top of Timberwolf Mountain, devour all the remaining corpses from the crash site, and claim the Long Dark Eating Contest Intercontinental Championship belt.
Game of the Year and it's not even fair. Devs, I hope you're still reading this thread.

Granted, he only ate roughly 3-1/2 kgs, but he's still a hero in my book.
Who cares if its necro. Game is still nit fixed and the issue is still preaty alive
i try to simulate that in my play throughs. i eat 2-3 kg of meat per day, some cat tails and something sugary if i can find it and coffee/tea to down it all(i usually find metric tons of coffee, i think my character is now an addict). i try to eat it in 2-3 meals instead of just one big one.

and even with taking this in mind i still find it hard to believe that wolfing down 3-4 kgs of meat or 5-6kg of fish per day is possible and or healthy.
I myself am a big man. eating about 1kg of meat in 1 sitting is possible for me but i would be stuffed.
also, they guys at hinterland are pretty much on the money here too:
During sleep, a person's weight and the number of hours he or she sleeps determines how many calories do you burn sleeping. Normally, a person burns about 0.42 calories for every pound in one hour of sleep. For instance, a 150 lb. person burns about 63 calories in one hour.
For example 1kg of river fish cooked/baked is 2000 calories not 400. here it can go more than double
Say you could live for a week on one deer. Hunting once per in game week is more realistic, but it's also one of the most challenging and exciting parts of the game. What do you do the rest of the time?
I know some people play the game to hibernate, but I think most of those are new to the game and in the minority in the long run. Make this change without adding other exciting/challenging things to do and we'd ALL spend our time staring at a bed with nothing better to do.
That is the reason why it is now.
But the game cannot relly only on feeding elephant apettite. There is more to it than that.
