It does not, I've had winds pick up in any given direction without and given leaning or preference, however, no one takes note of a tailwind or crosswind when it picks up, only a headwind because it has the most noticable effects.
I was crossing the ice on CH from the shore to Jackrabbit Island when the wind kicked up. Headwind!
I made it (eventually), collected some firewood, set some snares, then started to walk back. There was no wind at first, but when it started...headwind!
Yeah, I do that as well, to avoid the feeling of walking in place. It probably doesn't do much, but if it makes us feel more productive, then it's useful!
