No hatchet in Coastal Highway map
I just gave up on a save in a Coastal Highway start. I searched the entire map, all fishing shacks, bodies, buildings, the campsite, the abandoned lookout - no hatchet. Also no rifle. Since I started the game with no water, just come cold coffee, it was a struggle just to be able to search every location. That seems a little bit harsh for a Voyager start. By the time I discovered there was no hatchet anywhere in the map, it was too late to move to PV or ML, since not enough water left and no way to make a fire lasting enough to survive a night in case of emergency while travelling.

Maybe the hacksaw in the quonset should be usable for breaking down limbs and larger furniture? Without a hatchet, a player is limited to sticks, the few found fir and cedar logs and the few crates and small chairs for reclaimed wood on the CH map. Using all of the reclaimed wood for fires means no snares and thus no rabbit fur mitts. Being unable to break down fir and cedar means no repairs to vital equipment like hunting knives.

I get the randomness, but it seems there should be a minimum threshhold for some items. Every map should have some means of starting a fire, some way of breaking down limbs for firewood and either a rifle or a found survival bow. Surely there is a way for the game code to check to see if a bare minimum equipment mix has been generated for each map?

The hatchet is actually one of the items that is guaranteed to spawn at least once on each map. It's not always indoors, and it's certainly not always easy to find, but it's definitely out there somewhere. Of course, it is possible to survive without it, but having one absolutely makes life easier.

I have found the hatchet twice on CH - both times it was At that big log pile on the shoreline, where there is a small, squat trailer building. It was lodged into a tree stump. . Hope that helps!

Some other possible outside hatchet spawn locations in CH that i know of :

* Fishing Camp : Near some fishing nets
* Waterfront Cottages : Next to a corpse
* Bear Creek Campground
* Rabbit Grove : Next to the cabin
* Gas station : Under some tires (well hidden)

Thanks for the replies. I was used to ML where things are more obvious, I guess. I had found the hatchet once in the campground after starting in ML and moving to CH. I'll have to check the logs more next play.

Next game, only halfway through CH exploration and I have 4 hatchets. I shall stop worrying about it from now on.

Thank you, I found my hatchet in the gas station. You saved my life.

Just don't go into DP expecting to find a hatchet. Have never found one there. Assume Hinterland expects you to make one at the forge. DP overall is a pretty tough act. Usually limeted food and clothing. Have spawned there a couple of times just to prove I could but was glad to run the boards on all the loot and leave.

It's not terribly hard to survive without a hatchet honetsly, it's just a bit of a pain, sleep indoors, only use fires when necessary, and try to find some good warm clothing, trudge your way to DP and craft yourself some tools.

My current run is in CH and I have found maybe five hatchets (not bragging sorry). I was thinking about it the other day though:

1. You can sharpen it but not repair it with metal like the can opener? Not sure about that one.... I have been thru two sharpening stones now and not just rotate the hatchets.

2. Is the can opener and lantern the only two items that you can use a repair kit on?

3. And why does the prybar wear out??? LOL! I currently own a prybar that belonged to my grandfather and that thing will never wear out!

From what I've seen, the hatchet is a guarenteed spawn inbetween wood piles at the Fishing Huts, as well as underneath the tire rack on the left side of the Quonset Gas Station's Garage. This means that no matter which side of the map you spawn on or really no matter where on the map you spawn, there is a free hatchet less than half a day away from your starting location on CH.

Honestly it's the most balanced map in the game for more reasons than tool spawns; there's gaurenteed spawns for nearly everything, and the most spawn locations for the rifle, with one being gaurenteed and the rest having at least a bullet or cleaning kit, condensed into 1/5th the total map.

Thanks for that info! I never played CH much in the past because it seemed like there were so many wolves, but I started my last game there and really enjoy it. I find that you can see the wolves much better and not accidentally sneak up on them, well unless you are near the Quanset Gas Station! Got attacked there three times, lol!

DP is a fun area but you're right there's little to eat and unless you really want to craft hatchets, knives and arrow heads it's not that important a place to visit. I've never found all that much good loot and in general there's little ammo to be found so it's an optional place to visit in the early game.

Knives and hatchets can only be sharpened. They used to be repairable but not for awhle now. When the whet stones run out, they can no longer be maintained and will deteriorate with use.

Can openers, lantern, hacksaw and heavy hammer can be repaired using scrap and/or fir and a tool kit. I think the tool kit itself can be repaired.

The prybar wears out because nothing in TLD lasts forever except the winter weather and even that might not be forever, if the devs have their way. :)

Glad you finially found some gear. Next time on CH be sure check all vehicles, I found the rifle once in the back seat of the car at Commuters Lament on my way out to DP. Hatchets can often be found in the fishing shacks too, knives also.
