Timberwolf Mountain plane wreck
Just wanted to give everyone a fair warning before they attempt to reach the plane wreck, the long way round is very dangerous i wouldnt reccomend going up there at all without the best end game gear. I underestimated how long it would take to get there and luckily at 25% health and hypothermia i made it. It gets very cold up there even in the best clothes and bear skin sleeping bag i was slowly freezing to death.

You'll be happy to know that the loot within the plane is well worth the effort, i shall spend the next week or so calling the plane my home (I really dont wanna go all the way down now)

Thanks for the warning! I got lucky.
I chose to start on Timberwolf Mountain for a new save and stumbled upon the landing gear pf the plane wreck almost immediately after the hut at the foot of the lake because even though I spawned halfway up the mountain, I started climbing downward.
Turns out, following the trail of plane pieces backwards leads you right to the Pleasant Valley exit, which I found to be super convenient for going and retrieving some better gear to come back with! Though, I have yet to return and find the rest of the plane after seeing that journal page in the hut.

Hmm, I got the the summit on Pilgrim difficulty with starter clothes but depending on the route you choose, it should be possible with starter clothes on higher difficulties. You can have up to 3 "lindoor" caves on your way there which should be enough to keep you warm during the climb, provided you take 2-3 days worth of food/water and wood or a hatchet with you.

I had no idea how to get to the mountain so I started there, on Stalker of course.

I survived 5 nights and 4 days there in my starting gear, without a gun or prybar to loot the containers. I had to turn back after the long dark cave (pun absolutely intended), since I was running out of matches and unable to fix neither my clothes nor bedroll.

Now I'm getting geared up in Pleasant Valley, looking to ascend again within a few days.

The guy a bit up in the thread, Drooda, he made a great guide, should get you where you need to go.

To be fair I took only 2l of water and 1600 cal worth of food. I left from crystal lake and ended up waiting out
a snow storm in the open cave for ages. Left my hatchet behind too.
Always be prepared for the worst I guess but I was adamant that I needed to take a 5kg climbing rope with me
Only to find 2 ropes up the mountain anyway

@JingleTom I'd hugely appreciate it if you could give me a discreet location for the plane hull! So far I've found that long dark cave leading to the 3rd engine (and a few excellent supplies). I've scaled 3-4 mountains in the process. Any hints on where to go from here? Having fun discovering but seriously getting jack of blizzards and freezing my ×@#$ off...

The TM is a hard map to start with, due the demanding weather and lot's of elevation and climbing. And so far we're discovered only one ''safe''house, so there's not so much of shelter to be. But when it comes to the loot, there's something like 4-6 of those big cargo containers with plenty of stuff, from food to tool and to clothings, etc, etc (+ the plane wreckage)

Plus, small hint, you can sleep inside the turbine engines and have small shelter, just put campfire inside, bedroll and you can sleep the bad weathers/nights off.

I may have lucked out in my most recent attempt, but I think I found another possible shelter as you follow the airplane wreckage. See spoiler below.

SPOILER on possible shelters in TWM:

I managed to survive for two days inside the exhaust bell of one of the engines. I had all the premium clothing, however, and had a VERY high clothing bonus, so the ambiant temperature inside was already around 30 degrees F. I was able to build a fire in one corner inside the engine, and spread my sleeping bag out next to it. I woke up the next morning and was still at 100% health. Then a bear came and peered at me just outside the engine, but didn't seem to want to come near. So I shot him in the face and (this has never happened before) he died from the one shot instead of attacking me. I spent the next day harvesting meat and firewood, and managed to survive a second night. I then, very stupidly, died from hypothermia because I stayed outside too long.

The various caves aren't too bad for shelter either, if you can avoid getting bear'd. The area with a whole bunch of deer saved me from a rather badly-timed blizzard. I'd brought a large amount of food from Pleasant Valley so I didn't shoot any....but there's plenty to keep you going if you bring enough matches, an axe, and something to hunt with. Wood can be a little scarce though if you aren't carrying some around just in case.

Personally, I'd make a point of stopping at every good quality shelter (particularly large caves, or where the game has given you some supplies and wood) to stock them up a little before heading up to the next area. THat way if things go bad you can just head back to the last camp and wait it out, rather than freezing on the mountainside. It's also a good way to get all that heavy loot back if you do it bit-by-bit.
