For Children?
I am thinking of buying this game, but my little brothers will want to play it if I do, so I have a few questions.

1. I noted from watching a gameplay video that there was some bad language. Is there a child-friendly setting to turn this off? Alternatively, can I play the game successfully if I turn dialogue off completely?

2. I thought I heard a player mention a corpse. Are there corpses or other morbid scenes in the game?

3. Are player deaths or animal wounds violent or graphic?

1 Mute voice channel if the word "damn" is offensive, this is the only word if I recall right. And there is a real hydro dam layout in the game also.

Once again, your choice if to violent.

Its a good game but very hard to say if it's ok for children.

1) not sure, though I have not noticed any bad language.

2) not morbid, just frozen bodies, no gore. Ravaged deer show rib cage, but not graphic.

3) wolf struggle, kind of violent but not graphic. Animal wounds not graphic

I would say the game is ok for a 10 y/o

I think you can assuage your fears. The violence is not gratuitous. It is a thoughtful and engaging game of risk and resource management. It may be a little spooky for the very young.

A young child would become bored quickly with this game anyway. Slow paced gameplay, and a lot of moving inventory around, and planning. Not so much just running around. Less gore than any real hunting trip would have, some start coming on hunting trips as young as 5, or 4 even, so no worries there. The artistic style does not really allow for much gore either.

How old are your brothers? We have had a (I think) nine year old girl play and write a story and post it on the forums. Also, kids are capable of comprehending the difference between real and make believe at widely diverse ages, so you would have to know that about the kids too.

The athmosphere is pretty gloomy, though. It's not the violence, but the gloom that makes me personally think I wouldn't let anyone under 12 years play this game.

I don´t know if a child have a big patience to play this game. The most childs like action and adventure games. You can try if they will like it. There is no awful violent scenes or bad language in the game.

Alright, this all sounds pretty good, and you've all been very helpful. I just have one more question:

Can one play the game successfully without dialogue on, or does the player need to hear the cues given by the game character ("I'm hungry", etc.)? I think that, even without bad language, the game would be more immersive and first-person-ish if the character doesn't talk independantly and tell me things I don't know. :P

Thanks!

No you don't have to ... there is an complex menu to monitor your own condition & your surroundings ... the "cues" are just an additional hint ...

Alright sounds great! Thanks, everyone, for your help. It's also nice to see that there are still some games out there that can do their job and be a great, popular game, without morbid bloodbath graphics.

There is no gratuitous violence, but it always seems worth mentioning that we fully expect the final version of the game to receive a "Mature" rating. Just want you to have that information if the language is also worrisome for you.

Thanks, Bethany! I don't think it will be a problem, if I can just mute the dialogue volume.

dont let them play as the female character as in the place where it shows hunger and thirst etc ti shows the character's breasts

I'm not sure how much fun they'd have, but there is always the Voyager difficulty which could allow for an exploring game.
