Differences between picking male(female?
I don't know if this exists since it doesn't say when picking the gender, but I've been thinking about it. Is there a difference? For example men can carry more, and females can run for a longer period of time/ or faster.

Is this something you (Hinterland) have thought about implementing?

The female can cook and sow better and the male can run further, carry more and fight better.

ALL ABOVE ARE LIES! There is no difference, devs have stated so, only difference is the voice and the exact words said.

I usually just pick male, since i like sounding like Solid Snake

might have to try female one time-maybe the dialogue would be a bit different-Sorry Hinterland, I know dialogue is a low priority-I'll take improved gameplay and new areas over dialogue any day.

I only use the female character whenever possible in every game I play, because of an age old saying that I have always agreed to religiously, it's better to stare at a woman's than at a man's butt. True story, at least i'm honest about it.

In all seriousness though, I would much rather listen to a female voice. Something feels right about it, maybe it's rooted in my instinct as a straight dude, but whenever I hear a woman feeling threatened out there it has a significantly higher impact than a dude, and I feel that in this game.

The voice acting is phenomenal for both genders, it's just that I've grown so used to the female VOs that I don't think I could deal with the male character anymore.

Be cool if you picked female you had to craft tampons for a certain time of the month, for realism.

You know, I actually agree with the whole personal hygiene element, but would everybody? Not only for the female character, but for the male one too. No. 1 and 2, + that for the chicks

When underfed, underweight and stressed, the nature of a period happening decresses in time and frequency.

How would you balance the female/male then if that + was added, make passive animals more skidish for males testerone while making bears and wolves frenzy durring female times?

That's my concern actually, bro. I think it's not something you could even balance, you know.

It would be something i'd definitely add to my "unbalanced, mod should add it" list and i'd deal with with adverse situation myself heh heh. I feel the same potential for mods in this game than I do in Fallout, where I add my own spice with mods to cover "immoral" and unbalanced things. Totally worth it being pregnant and irradiated with a nuke shootin' bb gun! ;)

Just to add some information here, there are no plans to introduce physical differences (carrying capacity, ect.) between the male and female characters. :)

Thank you for answering! The voice acting is great btw.

I prefer to hear a female voice as well, but not always; especially not when they're being harpies.

I agree with Hinterland about strength and stamina.

Lol I read his tampons suggestion as a joke, do you guys seriously want tampons as a feature? I guess if nothing else, TLD would be crossing some boundaries. +1 for hygiene (maybe just laundry) though because it would add another use for water.

In all honesty, yes I would 10/10 deal with having to look out for bodily needs in a survival game, including the excess burden of a female's reproductive cycle, even if that makes playing the female character "harder" than the male one. But that's just my "purist" preference, I would rather enhance things even at the cost of balance or difficulty to better suit a certain degree of realism or lore-related fun. Or perhaps just because something's immoral, really.

I honestly don't think it's a good idea. +1 to Hinterland making zero mechanical difference between playing as a female vs male character in sandbox. There are games where that difference is present and is pulled off well (Mount and Blade, for example, where female characters face rampant sexism but are nonetheless just as capable as males), but generally I feel like this isn't the case. If TLD was to introduce it, I think it'd be a case of the latter. You could argue that a male would have higher strength/carrying capacity, which may be true in general, but when we start looking at individuals (especially individuals who are both in great physical condition, like our bush pilot/survivors here) "in general" doesn't hold much water. I am a man in decent shape, but I definitely know some women I would not want to challenge to a feat of strength or endurance! The only real difference would be...hygenic, and I really don't think I need to see going to the restroom etc addressed in a first-person survival game :steammocking:

All that said, I will always, only play female in sandbox, due to the only difference between the two that's been there from the beginning: Jennifer Hale's voice acting. You can fight like a wolf, run like a leopard, but you'll *never* be better than Commander Shepard!

I should go. ;D

Some of the more overtly offensive (and sexist) comments have been removed. That kind of discussion is not welcome here, even as a joke. Please keep this in mind moving forward or the thread will be locked.
