sharpen hatchet with simple tools?
Only the whetstone works but I'm seeing that simple tools can sharpen the knife and "ax" as well in discussions. All my simple tool boxes are at 100% and, forgive me, I can't find a use for them....and please may the stone last longer in the updates!!. Thanks. New to the steam chat room. Usually there's a witty quote at the end of these. So...insert witty comment here____________.

From what I understand, the Simple Tools and Quality Tools are used to repair hacksaws and lanterns. You have to have some Metal Scraps as well for the repair (like cloth for clothes). I think those two items are it... if there's another someone can come in and add that.

I heard they used to do more, and were a bigger part of the game. This was before my time as I just started playing in December. It seems now they're extremely unnecessary in the amount of them you can find in the world versus how much you'll need them. You don't even need to repair a lantern, just refuel it. It doesn't degrade that way.

You USED to be able to use the tools to repair hatchets and knives. But the most recent big update added Whetstones instead.

Tools still repair hacksaws, hammers, and lanterns, though.

I'm guessing they will serve another purpose eventually. Gonna have to get that battery out of the car somehow, right?

Awesome, thanks all.

And maybe a rubber or plastic hose to siphon gas from the cars since the only "gas station"has no pumps.

Your lantern COULD get damaged in a bear attack... which then you could repair it. But unless it gets completely damaged, there really is little reason to repair it. And if it gets completely damaged, it is removed from your inventory anyhow so you CANT repair it.

So... yeah.... hacksaws.

There was a time in TLD when scrap metal was extremely valuable and rare - it was needed to repair the knife and hatchet, and you needed the toolbox (also rare at the time) to do it. Later the hacksaw was introduced and you could harvest scrap metal from a lot of items with it. Since then, scrap metal has become almost worthless in game terms. The last major update introduced rifle cleaning kits and whetstones. Since then, toolboxes are not needed to keep knife, hatchet & rifle in good condition anymore. So toolboxes have become almost worthless, too. It is all part of the game evolving. Some items increase in "value" as new items and mechanics are introduced, other items decrease. It's all still alpha, and we may see scrap metal and toolboxes increase in value again.

You can use the tool boxes to repair other tool boxes as well. So...if you're really anal about the condition of your tools...

I wish the whetstone lasted longer, then the tool boxes would make more sense. not complaining, love the game thus far. I find myself hording the hatchet for fir wood only for the extra 1.5 hours overall burn time vs the ceder. thanks again all, gonna take advantage of these steam chats more often. looking forward to experience this game grow into stardom. on the right path as far as im concerned.

We used whetstones at home for 10-15 years, in Long Dark this items broke in a week, so realistic.... only two stones on starter map, without possibilities to use just sandstone from the river or tools from box. Devs, are you serious?

I like the fact that one of the notes or cairns actually has a quote about sharpening blades with smooth stones from a river. When I first read that I got my hopes up and spent quite a bit of time at the stream on coastal highway. Like other users, I had a whetstone I used for years effectively, but now, nothing.

Every time I see the knife sharpener in my kitchen knife block at home I hope a little that this is something we'd see in-game.

You also magic water bottles out of thin air when melting snow, so realism isn't the point of the game, get over it.

Simple tools (not sure about quality tools) in your inventory allow you to craft simple arrows faster.
jswilliams Nov 29, 2017 @ 6:53am
It's interesting the game tells you how long it takes to craft arrow shafts with ax or knife, and we know simple arrows are 1.5h w/hands, but no idea how long it takes to craft simple arrows with simple and quality tools.

But thanks for the heads up!

Another necroed thread XD. Whetstones are balanced for the game mechanics, not realism. And yes, if you don't mind using tools, you can accelerate arrow crafting.
