In regards to putting stuff on the table or shelves , I only put stuff that doesn't degrade such as tools , weapons etc. Hope that helps.
- items outside (at least some of them) degrade faster than stored materials. Example, i put bear meat in a container and then some chunks on top of the kitchen table (because fridge was full). The meat on the table rotted and disappeared long before the one in the container. Id assume other items with degradation have similar behavior.
- Any kind of container in the game doesn't degrade or lose its properties.
What you can do is try and manage the 40kg you have for essentials. As in, store the non perishables on the floor, on a shelf, table, wherever, things like wood, sticks, kerosene, storm lanterns, all the tools, rifles, bows, etc etc. Maybe you can manage by then.
I use containers for meat and matches. Everything else goes on shelves, counters or the floor. Sometimes I actually find myself enjoying the process of arranging all my junk on the counter so it's semi-organized. Yeah, I may have a touch of OCD. :)
