Can opener or hunting knife?
Is it worth carrying can opener around? Or is there some kind of calories loss when opening it with a knife? Can opener faster opening I guess tho I have hard time seeing great difference.
What you think, should I just carry hunting knife or both hunting knife and can opener?

The only difference between the knife and the can opener is which one you wear down to open the can. So if you aren't going for a really long run just use the knife and save the weight.

Alrighty, Ill go with only knife for now then. Now when I looked at it, the knife durability went down by 2% when I opened can with knife, seen quite a few whetstones, I guess Ill be using them on my knives for now.

Usually only have a can opener at a "base", but this run have been working with a almost depleted whetsone and have been carrying the opener and I resent the extra weight-finally got 2 whetstone from a cargo container on TWM-along with 5 rifle cleaning kit-need the whetstones but not the cleaning kits-no ammo-rifle left long ago at a base with 7 rounds - go figure.

IIRC, the hatchet only decreases by 1% when opening cans.

I try to never use my tools for anything. Ever. Sometimes you have to but it's really rare.

if you use the can opener you get the full amount of food inside the can if you use the knife or the hatchet you lose a percentage of the food/calories from each can so the can opener does help. i lose 30 or 35% sometimes

No calorie loss from a tool only if you smash a can open without one.

Why is this even a question? Do you want to damage your knife a vital survial tool or just use a can opener for the intended purpose?

When I'm out wandering, I only eat meat, MREs, cattails, or bars (candy/energy). It's too much trouble to bring cans and a can opener with me, so I leave them at my home base.

When I'm at the home base, I use a can opener to open the cans, because why waste a knife or a hatchet.
WireDawg Dec 29, 2015 @ 7:33pm
I only eat meat once every 3-4 days anyways. Even if I picked up anything else to eat it would decay before I need it.

My non-meat food items don't seem to decay when they're stored in a container. I have a can of tomato soup that's been at 38% (which is how I found it) for several days.

IDK about in game but in real life cans can last easily many years. I think your tomato soup can stay at 38% for 600 days at least........:steamhappy:

I think the devs should go back to the initial idea of loosing a percentage of the calories when using any tool that is not the can opener. Smashing should waste the most, then hatchets, knives and the opener should waste nothing.

This makes more sense, now that the knife only needs the whetstone to get its condition restored.

Semi agree-don't think I can open a can with a hatchet without losing some content but I know I do it with a knife with no lose-takes a bit of practice is all
