Thirsty ? Dehydrated ?
there is something strange . Sure I've just played a short time to see and try but the first how can I be Thirsty or dehydrated in a snowy land ?

Just eat snow or melt it in your hands or in a can and you have water .....

You probably could (in RL) ... but both eating Snow, and melting it with your Body ... will result in Hypothermia or at least Freezing (to some degree) ...

Without Fire or Central Heating, it's basically just a very bad idea ... which of course could be implemented to teach about Survival, but would be probably just to frustrating for some people ...

Snow can contain small peices of dirt and germs especially with lots of wild animals around, although it may not be too harmful I would not want to drink it. Snow is great if your goal is to preserve a frozen corpse, but if it is not then the cold snow will rob you of your warmth and give you hypothermia.

Make a fire, melt and boil some snow.

Eating snow is a well documented way to increase dehydration.

It would be nice to have a purity differential based on fresh snowfall since it does snow. I remember as a kid we were allowed to eat fresh snow and make ice cream -- wait where is the ice cream maker in this game?

Well in real life snow is more air than water, so it wouldn't be a good idea to eat snow by itself. Ice would be the better solution, but since the water is full of germs, animal waste, and a lot of other things it would be safer to make a fire and boil it. Actually cold can be as dehydrating as being in a desert. Their isn't much moisture in the cold air making your skin dry out. Plus in game you are walking all the time when your travelling. That would increase the amount of water your body uses and we need to consume at least up to 8 cups of water a day. In a real life scenario having fresh water wherever you go is crucial , you need fresh clean water to survive.

Hunter is right on spot.

Lets get sick and hypothermia !!! (cause you need a lot of snow to get just 100ml of water and you need almost 3000ml)

I agree with you, especially when u carry like 30 kg all the time in warm clothes, sweat gonna be a problem also. But its a game, by definition it can't be realistic, but one game mechanic i find very annoying - to loose HP when you sleep in safe house, surrounded by bottles of boiled water and tons of food. Could make it possible to consume water autoatically from inventory or atleast wake up 3 hrs before dehydration. Still alpha, possibiliy to craft hat and scarf from a wolf or a rabbit or a bear must be there. And many many little details which i hope come in future or will be able to mod by players.

My only complaint, really, is the dehydration effect when you sleep. Unless I went and got myself hammered before sleeping, I don't think I have ever woken up dehydrated. A little thristy maybe but certainly not dehydrated.

Eating snow would be a short term solution, but in the end, it would kill you.

If you just eate snow in real life and survival situation. You would find out just how much and how quickly you lower your core body temperature. Its actually really dangerous to eat snow. Thats the fast track to hyperthermia

Ok eating snow may be not a good idea but you can't say that there's no water around you and that's impossible to drink . We're not in a dry desert where water is a real problem . In my point of view dehydratation isn't a major problem in our case .

You're right, water is not a problem for us. Contaminated water is.
You cant just start drinking water off a river just because you feel like it. you got to clean it with either small doses of bleach or you boil the hell out of it.
But hey, im not going to force you to do anything, if you want to have an early grave, go ahead.

Who said it is ... you're just making it one ... I probably stored ~500l within my current game, because I'm always using the remaining "Fire-Time" after cooking meat ...

The funny thing is, once it's melted, it never freezes again -> meaning even if melting snow without a Fire would be possible, it kinda works both ways ...

The Boiling / Cooking - Mechanic is a little bit simplistic ... which is kind of the point ... nobody knows what the character is actually doing (it's a game after all) ... in RL getting Water to ~60°C would suffice ... and considering I already have to melt it somehow, I don't see why I wouldn't, and if that's what the character is actually doing ...

There is also the fact that you already can drink "unpotable" water, which also doesn't mean it'll kill you off the bat ... but there is a higher chance of contracting Dysentry ... granted maybe it's a little bit too high for gameplay reasons ...

Considering you can't exactly go to the doctor, you shouldn't risk things, you probably risk in RL all the time, however ... so it only adds to the imersion of RL-Survival ...

PS : I also wouldn't recommend stuff like "Watermelon Snow", which might get you even more in trouble (even if you boil it) ... but considering it's a videogame ... distinguishing between several types of snow is probably a little bit too much ...
