the WHAT?

With the December 2023 update there was the introduction of a new affliction: Scurvy which results from a lack of Vitamin C in the survivor's diet. If your Vitamin C level (no gauge for it) gets low enough you get Scurvy Risk and if you take no action in ten days you get Scurvy. It involves some debuffs and loss of condition (which makes it a potentially fatal affliction).

For natural foods, Vitamin C is available in fish, rose hip tea, and birch bark tea and probably other stuff I missed. Modern packed food does have Vitamin C.

For the update, the affliction would only become operative for new saves for difficulty of Voyager and higher. Pilgrim is not affected at all. New saves because the devs reasoned that longer runs would see characters tending to have used up available sources of Vitamin C.

Note that some folks have expressed a desire for the affliction to be active in their existing saves, so can't please everyone.

this is wrong.... longer old runs have enough birchbark, and fishing lvl 5. the reset so that you have to start over is wrong..... too :). ppl with long runs set up the world and play hours over hours...... it is easy to fish a bit or get quick some birchbark.

they could add the new version to old plays..... and the dlc so far i see this it is a story you dont need this to sandbox survive

The Veggie Airline Food you can get is high in Vitamin C; I save mine for when I get Scurvy Risk and need a boost. They're not available on Interloper though. MREs and Tomato Soup are also good.

I do like that it encourages you to fish. It'll suck for new interloper runs though since you're going to have divert firewood over to that earlier than I'd want

I agree because this supports my point that this initial implementation wasn't well-thought out. Even runs that haven't gone that long shouldn't have much to worry about.

However, I could see potential complaints from new players/players crossing from other difficulties and as someone pointed out, that crowd is hard to please.

Currently doing a new loper run before they include it in old saves, in the usual backpedaling way they do.

This is a selfish un-thoughtful opinion. You would be back here moaning just as hard about how they ruined your long run if scurvy had been implemented into them all.

my example is I started a new run on a mostly loper setting. was crafting up my last piece of clothing and scurvy risk hit. ok ill eat a few cat tails. risk gone, cool, back to crafting. risk instantly back. ok, i guess i need a more, eat some gone and came back.... ok i'll drink some tea at bed, wake up and more risk... so its like chomp down on all my non renewable plants or probably to end this risk is to do a big fishing trip. think about a 500 day run. you will constantly have to fish or have fish at the ready in about all zones... just not fun game play.

sucks, I have 1440 hours in this game, I did love it dearly

I did notice that the way that Vitamin C was implemented for natural sources that were renewable (fish and birch bark) that it did bias towards remaining near fishing locations. I would assume that the devs would fix things so that characters would be able to fish on more streams and ponds. The lack of usable streams and ponds made New Fishing rather moot.

I suspect that the devs used fish as a Vitamin C source because it required the least amount of work to make functional. Birch bark seemed a natural and I did notice a lot more birch trees than before.

Maybe at some future update the devs might put in the backroom work to add animal organ meat (several mechanics needed) as Vitamin C sources.

I've not seen scurvy risk at all in my loper run so far. I stay well fed and eat/cook as I go.

I'm guessing you aren't eating enough/doing the starvation plan? Just curious as to what you were doing, and how you've managed to run into it.
Bunsen Honeydew Dec 15, 2023 @ 1:28am
I played stalker to run through the new part of the DLC, and then tried my best to get scurvy. I got to about 80% risk, and then chomped through 3 fish (one accidentally raw!), and it got rid of the risk - for now. But need to do some more experiments with Birch to see how a long run 'loper late game would work out.
But places like coastal highway are even more appealing as a primary base now.

or just make it an optional setting so that way people who enjoy it as-is don't get penalized.
i like scurvy. it gives you a more long term reason to move around. feels very well designed to me.
