What's the point of rock caches?
considering that things don't despawn when left in the open

To have your own container wherever you want. That's it.
Can be useful in regions like Hushed River Valley where there are not many containers (only backpacks and corpses).
+ I think you get a marker on the map.

You can also use them to keep track of what you have and where. Each cache you have have will show up on your journal page and you can make notes as to what's inside.

That said, I don't use them myself but for the OCD survivor it might trigger a little organizational dopamine here and there.

Cause for when you want to grab a bunch of sticks all at once, rather than one by one off the ground.

Very nifty to have your pile of stick inside a pile of rocks.

Also, the pile of rocks looks nice as a marker or something. It makes a statement, like, "I was here" and "I made this pile of rocks" and "I can store a large quantity of sticks and stuffs".

you can use a rock cache to store rocks in the cache, or to store 50 rocks as a rock cache. or save 50 rocks as a rock (build it) cache and store 200 stone in the rock cache. so a rock cache is worth 250 rocks. with 250 rocks from the rock cache you can build 5 rock caches and store 1000 rocks in these caches. so you have finally 1250 rocks. with these you can build :poocry::campfireTLD:

Placed on the ground near the broken pier at the canary, it allows you to transfer items up to the milling machine without having to carry them up the rope and parkour course.

Good tips.

now i get it.... i think this is the reason why i can not longer place rockcaches in the outside part of a cave... because of such things like blocking cave entraces.

I use them for storing meat, it degrades more slowly outdoors but wolves will eat it if you leave it lying around. Useful if there are no containers outside your safe house

you can leave meat outside without fear of animals eating it. The only way a wolf will eat it, is if you drop it while aggro'd
