Turning the Travois
Has anyone tried the travois yet? If so, how do you turn while carrying it? It appears to me so far that you have to slowly turn it like a ship turning the rudder and then slowly turning over the course of your travel.

And if that's how it works, then it seems to me that we ought to be able to turn it a little sharper and quicker than that. It may be an extra load but it's not a battleship.

I left my travois on the snow with stuff inside by the Camp Office for a night. No change and its condition didn't change (but that might be because I didn't leave it for a long time). Whether they decay normally (i.e. not from use) remains to be seen.
I've seen mine degrade by leaving on the ground once, but I am not sure whats triggering it, bad weather or just time ?
I first crafted it at Mystery Lake, left it around a day in front of the door while I was busy cooking and gathering things to slowly fill it up, was still 100%.
Then I started my way to the new zone, but theres a bunch of tunnels with freight cars before it, so I had to empty it, a few times, while doing so I seen it go from 60% to 59% while I was moving items, that's the only time I seen it happen.

So I'm not 100% certain if it really degrades over time or if it was just a one time, glitchy bit you know, that said, the % goes down way too quickly when you use it, by the time I reached the new zone mine was at 40% or less, I even went back to my main base to get hides and guts to repair it later on.

Notes from my little adventure, the travois needs a little tweaking, I could cross a bridge made by a fallen tree, I was very very surprised, but I couldn't fit next to a freight car in a tunnel, even though you can place two characters next to each other because it's so wide.

It is super fun to have though, I had lots of woods and different stuff, I could just camp wherever I want to on interloper, it's really awesome but I'd love to have the travois not eat my stuff at 0%, I have lots of meat at 0% because cooking lv5 and I cannot store it inside, that kind of sucks, I never liked that feature, we need to be able to choose to destroy an item not automatically lose it in containers.

Couple notes. I went from Mystery Lake Trailers to Train Depot ( before airfield) and used 67% from it dragging.
I do think different terrain made it deteriorate faster, but unconfirmed.

It did take me over a week travel time as I stopped in ML cabin and restocked and resorted. and one other stop, Plus portage and one or 2 blizzards I left it for some short time.

There are 5 places during that trip that you will need to carry your loot as it does not traverse. One of them I would actually recommend going to the next one ( 3-4) in order to not pack and repack.

As to turning. Yea, it is a slow turn. DONT FORGET your THREE POINT TURNS - reverse and then go forward( or 52 point turns). Works like a champ.
I noted during exits from zones I seemed to be at an angle, wondered if I was pointing North. One of them was face into wall.
Also remember, you can take all the stuff out and redeploy, even it you are carrying 95KG and cant move.. That might set you straight.

Oh yes I had it too, it's pretty annoying when the other side of the zone is small to maneuver !

A word about opening fishing holes. If you're a fisherman and a long playthrough type of player, I highly recommend keeping a heavy hammer in your fishing hut to open a hole in the ice. It can be repaired with a fir firewood which is easy enough to get ahold of. If you trade off the condition loss of using a hacksaw to harvest several fir logs it seems like a good tradeoff for months of fishing.

Yea i like to keep my hammers at the forges less to carry. Normally it not so bad but I'm 116 days on my interloper run and only found 2 crowbars.

When I saw word that the travois would be using saplings I was hoping it would use birch since arrows are not as scarce now that you can make the fire hardened ones for small game hunting. So I'm also a bit disappointed it will consume scarce maple saplings. Bummer.

And if it wears out that fast, I'll be using up all my maples on the travois. Needs to be a better way of doing it. Otherwise, it's one of those items in the game that I'm never going to use because it's just not cost effective.
You use cured deer pelt and a cured gut to repair it so it's not bad at all, plus it give you 3 by dismantling it, so you only need to find 1 maple sapling and cure it if it breaks some how, which you should never have to replace it because it breaks. So you only need to ever use 3 maple saplings for 1 travois unless you plan on making more than one which is a waste with it only being 2.2lbs. It's a game changer.

So we've figured you dont need to repair with maple, and that there are more maples in game. I just came across a group of 5 maples in one spot!

That doesn't sound very nice. 3 maple saplings is kind of cruddy if it decays that fast. I really think they need to revamp decay system its so expensive for some items its often not worth using them. For instance i was losing about 3 condition of the hatchet to break a normal branch for a whopping 3 min gain over doing it barehanded. and the amount you lose from a crowbar to make an ice fishing hole is crazy high for something that should be almost indestructable and you can't even repair it!

Avoided the toxin, got stuck on a mountain and my Travois and everything in it disappeared, all that loot, Gone, everything i just worked on in the last 6 hours, Gone, No, it's not in my inventory, it's not stuck anywhere that i can find it, it's no longer attached to my character, it's just Disappeared along with everything else.

yes I understand this is a new update, but damn it, what a waste of 6 hours if i hadn't saved i would have just rage quit.

looking forward to bug fixes, because 165 lbs of loot is a lot of loot to lose.

Checked the time needed to repair the travois. If you have a regular knife the time is 60 minutes (not 30 as I had posted earlier, my dementia I suppose). If you have to use a regular hatchet the time is longer at 90 minutes. If you don't have either the time to repair is 120 minutes (2 hours) which I presume means by hand. No work bench needed. I didn't try to see what improvised tools would require (improvised tools, what's that in Pilgrim?) or whether tool kits have any impact on repair time.

Improvised knife takes 78 minutes (1 hr 18 min) about 30% longer than a regular knife. I don't have an improvised hatchet handy.

The travois has width (duh). You could walk between trees but if dragging the travois the game can say no space for the travois and you'll have to back up and find a different path.

Found that the travois won't fit in through the entrance of the No. 3 coal mine / connecting link between Crumbling HIghway and Desolation Point. Can't deploy it in the mine either. I would guess that Cinder Hills mine won't allow use of the travois. Just found out it cannot be deployed inside, like inside the Quonset Garage.

Also discovered that one cannot drop the travois in its collapsed state, it has to be deployed. I suppose I should have noticed there was no Drop button only Action and Deploy buttons.

ETA: Improvised knife time, correct time using regular knife.
